Bethesda Magazine 2024 College Acceptances Out

Or maybe accept that getting into the Ivy League isn’t the be all/end all of achievement.

I think the article on how the public schools in MD aren't preparing our kids for college was very depressing.

We live in a culture where everyone gets an A and an overinflated sense of entitlement for very little.

A private school with no grade inflation and higher expectations probably prepares our kids more.

Very eye opening.

The outer pointlessness of applying to Harvard - 4/293. That's ridiculous. Save your $85 and have a nice meal.

What a great safety Indiana is - 232/322. Totally underrated school.

And how challenging Vanderbilt is - 12/233. And Duke - 17/368.

It's tough out there.

Grade inflation. So many kids get very, very high grades in MCPS. Anything 89.5% is an A. Quarters are averaged so that an A and B equal an A. It's really hard to do poorly if you're a kid who cares at all. Hence you have almost 400 kids applying to Duke

So true.
Meanwhile 3 kids from a small private get in…

There's an article in today's NY Times about how the most common college that girls at Brearley (fancy NYC private school) matriculate to is Harvard. So much has to do with preferences for legacies and big donors.

Or maybe it has to do with girls from Bradley are known to be prepared for Harvard level work. In the meantime kids in MoCo are given As for effort. Sick of the hate on this board for private schools. Your public schools are failing your children and overinflating parents egos

Well, you really don't know MCPS. Sure grade inflation is real, but top kids are very well prepared for top schools. You are sick of hate, but then you turn around and hate on others. Hmmm

I’m surprised you weren’t already aware of that.

Yeah that's now how people in Whitman boundary think.

Read the Bethesda Magazine article. Over 50% of MCPS high schoolers have at least a 4.0. Grades are meaningless in this district.

That’s nice. I grew up in a similar area in Westchester County, NY, where everyone had that mentality.

All it does is breed stressed out kids, and all for nothing.

Yep. And for those who question that stat, you can read the article here (starts on page 61): https://issuu.com/bethesdamagazine/docs/bethesda-sept-2024?ff

The quote is: “More than 51% of the class of 2023 graduated with a weighted GPA of 4.0 or higher, versus 27.8% for the class of 2013, according to MCPS.”

This is totally inaccurate. In our HS, so many accepts and attends aren't reported! I don't know how compiled this data but it is wrong. There are over twice as many accepts for one of the schools than it reports.

Well if 50% of the kids are getting a 4.0 from MCPS without that much effort, they can't be as stressed out as if they actually were competing heavily against their classmates.

It stresses them out because it’s a lottery. Not to mention, they’re set up for failure because barely any of them will be admitted. Then they’ll think they failed in life.

There's plenty of qualified kids applying to elite colleges. But if a private school has Rupert Murdoch and Caroline Kennedy as typical parents of students, you're naive to be comparing them to the average MoCo student.

Isn’t Rupert Murdoch 93 years old?
