RMSC Minis

We also did Stroke and Turn and SwiMontgomery at the same time, so the kids were in the pool 3x/week. It was most helpful for building stamina rather than technique, though. On a do-over I might have done SwiMontgomery alongside a weekly more stroke-concentrated program (our individual experience was that there was some good stroke work at FINS).

How old were your minis when they tried out?

They were 7. Which has been nice, they will get two full years of minis. Now having accidentally fallen deep into this swimming world, the next one is trying out at 6. He does not like to be left behind his older siblings.

What was their skill level when they tried out? Legal in all 4? What kind of times?

I have had two DCs go through RMSC tryouts. My potential Mini was not timed at the tryout (they were looking for strength and technique). My potential Junior was (they were looking for strength, technique, _and_ speed).

RMSC coaches - whoever the coaches are for the site you are trying out for.

You don’t know their names? No introductions?

Not from the ones observing. Those are mostly associate coaches. We had an issue with the tryouts and the head coaches claimed to not be in the pool area at all.

It's really more about which hands you grease with private lessons or other USA swimming program you transfer from.

"Thanks for your email. I completely understand your frustration. I did ask the coaches that were evaluating the swimmers to try a dive if they had time. Unfortunately, one coach misunderstood and took them off the blocks instead of the side as I had mentioned. Diving off the side is all we would expect for anyone coming into our program. We know there aren't opportunities to go off blocks. I apologize."

No. You get the introductions when your kid makes the team.

They have tons of kids trying out. It’s very impersonal. The minis and juniors are big groups. It gets more personal with seniors.

No, that's not how the process works. There may have been some sort of passing mention of the name before they took the kids away for the evaluation... "Hi - I'm Sally and I'm the head coach and in a minute we'll be escorting your kids to the pool deck....blah, blah, blah..." or something similar. From there, it's a team of coaches 1 per lane or 1 per two lanes where they then evaluate the kids' ability.

The elites enjoy denying kids opportunities to practice on racing blocks, then demanding they use them at tryouts. It makes them feel entitled for their privilege of using public resources. They think they deserve it because they are superior cheaters.

Omg, you are still going on about this? Your kid has tried out and didn’t make it more than once. Your kid just isn’t fast enough combined with the fact that you have let your crazy out and the club doesn’t want to deal with you.

Wah wah, significantly less good than they claim to be. Have you tried the new coaching slime? It makes you even faster in the water.

Prospective Seniors in RMSC attend group tryouts like everyone else, ans the groups are not small.
What you're probably thinking about here is something more like an elite swimmer putting in for a club transfer at the national-training level. That is not going to look the same.
