I have to disagree. There's no reason for the OP to not be aware that MS-13 members can do horrible things.

I was a teacher in a similar neighborhood, and I would agree with the other teacher. She's just saying, unless you're a gang member in some sort of conflict with them, they generally don't go around attacking random people. It does sound like there are exceptions to that, but generally speaking, you're ok if you're not involved in whatever they're involved in.

I said anchor US citizen due to anchor baby status--not aware of another way to point out a cause/effect relationship. Educate me on a better phrasing please. As to your latter point, many gang members have hard-working absentee parents--does not mean they are not loving. They are just busy cleaning offices to put food on the table and are probably clueless as to the lure of the gang and 'parenting' it offers while they are off working. By the time they realize, it is probably too late. Once you're jumped in, etc. etc. And of course many gang members have horrible parents.
