mara salvatrucha gang (MS13) on Friday the 13th

I read on the Arlington Now blog that this gang - they are v. dangerous and pretty rampant in nova - just graffitied (is that a word??) a huge space in Pentagon City. One of the commenters pointed out that this gang apparently targets innocent bystanders on Friday the 13th and last time targeted people on bicycles in College Park. Is this something to actually be worried about? I live in Pentagon City where the activity was this week so I'm a little nervous.

I work in a HS in FCPS and have taught MS-13 members. I have never felt nervous around them particularly. Usually they keep to themselves and if they are violent, it is against members of other gangs or people they think are in other gangs. I have lived here for 15+ years and cannot really think of a time they just randomly went out attacking people on the street. So, no, I wouldn't be too worried about them coming and attacking you in Pentagon City on Friday.

I can't comment on Friday, but I can say that they brutalized a Leesburg couple a year ago. They were out on a morning walk, and beat the husband to death, all 5 raped the wife, beat her and left her for dead. She spent months in the hospital. They were out trolling a suburban community looking for someone to rape and kill, unfortunately this grandma and grandpa were in their crosshairs.

Gang violence by MS13 and other such scumbags are very real and very dangerous.

OP, if you are worried I would call Frank Wolf's office and talk to his person who is the liason to the Gang Task Force and see if the rumors are based on any fact. He is very involved in this topic and takes it seriously. I have even complained to his office when I've seen MS13 grafitti in my neighborhood and he has gotten the right people at VDOT on it within 24hrs cleaning it up.

Are they a presence in Adams Morgan/Columbia Heights? There was a murder this week that might be gang-related. A block west of 16th St. NW.

I work in an immigrant community teaching ESL to adults. I believe that I have encountered people in MS13 (they don't just come right out and say that sort of thing, but definately gang members).

I have experienced the above scenarios where one person said she was comfortable with them in her classroom.

I have seen them involved in stabbings shotings in the Mt. Pleasant/Columbia Heights areas numerous times during my five years living and working in that area.


This gang lives up to its horrific reputation. It doesn't hurt to be cautious tomorrow.

What is the point of your post? Gang members aren't dangerous? Or that they aren't any more dangerous than normal high school students?

I have to disagree. There's no reason for the OP to not be aware that MS-13 members can do horrible things.

Yes. Their tags are all over. Weren't they the ones that shot up the 42 bus on Mt. Pleasant street in the middle of the afternoon a few years back? Riding on bikes and shooting like cowboys.

Two active gangs in Adams Morgan Columbia Height are at Girard and 13th and Euclid and 17th. Jim Graham sent out an email about the young murdered this week and said chances for retaliation is high. Names: CTU and 1-7.
