AOS AET admissions decisions this week?

Trying to understand the criteria for “waitlist” for this year?

Does anyone know what was the cutoff for being admitted to AET or AOS

Do we get a detailed mail explaining the scores sometime later ?

Waitlist means your kid did well on the tests but when they put all the kids that did well on the tests into a lottery luck wasn't on your side.

No idea what the cutoff is, the scores for the STEM Thinking Skills test get mailed to you in April

I'm the PP. https://go.boarddocs.com/vsba/loudoun/Board.nsf/files/BRQ3VQ08B7BB/$file/Academies%20of%20Loudoun%20Admissions%202020_072020.pdf

Applicants are rank ordered for each assessment, and a predetermined number are placed in
the finalist pool. Prior to the lottery, admissions staff would verify that every LCPS middle
school is represented in the finalist pool. A specified minimum number of applicants from each
middle school will be included in the lottery. Also prior to the lottery, admissions staff would
verify that economically disadvantaged students (SES) are represented proportionally. If not,
SES would be weighted.
● Admissions offers and wait lists would be determined by a random lottery of eligible student

And the spot goes to someone in the same school? Or how is it passed down?

Same school first, if none goes to general pool

Are the waitlisted applicants in both the school waitlist pool and the general admissions pool? Like if a student declines an offer but there is no one to give it to at the school, does the general pool have a ranking of all the waitlisted kids?

Unfortunately, specific details of the admission process are not transparent. The management of waitlists and admission pools is closely guarded and not publicly disclosed.

We've transitioned to an Equity focused admissions world where handpicking students has become necessary to meet diversity chart. Ironically, while it's easy to extend offers, acceptance would mean student signing up for putting in more effort than minimum required at base school alone. Many of the disinterested students, who were solicited to apply, end up ignoring their offer, which then returns to the committed students on the waitlist. All said, most competitive students eventually receive an offer for one of the four AOS AET pathways, although not necessarily for their preferred one.

I don't think 1 Black student and 353 Asian students is equity.

Academy of Science and Academy of Engineering and Technology applications vs. students accepted in 2018-2019

-American Indian -- 8/2

-Asian -- 1,332/353

-Black/African-American -- 65/1

-Hispanic -- 82/12

-Multiracial -- 78/15

-Pacific Islander -- 2/2

-White -- 549/104

Interesting. Among all racial groups, which one has the most number of rejections?

Would be nice if AOS posts something to clear any confusion if there is a lottery in place for the kids who did well in the exam

It is tough for lot of kids who are naturally smart and interested kids receiving rejection emails. My DD is a class topper and was scoring almost perfect score in the practice tests and was equally confident for the exam.

She is in dilemma now as to what could have gone wrong. According to her - AOS website has a selection criteria listed for both AOS and AET that does not specify lottery being used.

Yes, in the internal LCPS documents I found and posted lottery is used after they decide the cutoff for scores. If you get above the cutoff, you get entered into the lottery. If you are selected, you're accepted, all others waitlisted. If you don't make the cutoff, you're rejected.

DD got waitlisted for AET..

Her first choice is Engineering and second is Entrepreneurship.

Will above preferences make any impact in getting her off the waitlist ?

Why were you when they were changing the admissions process from merit to equity based? Now, diversity takes precedence over merit. A panel essentially handpicks
the applicant pool to satisfy a diversity chart. The number selected is few more than needed, and all names go into a bowl. Names are drawn, offers get sent, and rest go on the waitlist.
