Is it ok to bring a coffee into 8AM Catholic Church mass?

So I think OP got the answer (and I’m shocked how many Catholics didn’t know you need to fast 1 hour before mass) but I want to add that during Covid I drank coffee while we watched mass on TV every Sunday and it was lovely. Obviously doesn’t work any more but I miss it!

I’m surprised at that. We’re Anglican and we fast. See St Augustine’s Prayer book. All Catholics I know fast at least an hour, many from the preceding night

I truly have never heard this and I grew up going to mass every single Sunday and going to Catechism. To be fair though we had breakfast before 9 and mass was at 10, so there wouldn't be a meal between that and mass.

In evangelical churches this would be absolutely ok!

No food or drinks in the sanctuary. Coffee hour afterwards.

Not what you’re asking, but at y UU church it would be fine.

no. you're supposed to fast 1 hour before communion and coffee would break that rule.

I thought zero calorie coffee (w/o cream, w/o sugar) was a permitted beverage during days of fasting? So why would black coffee in the 60 min before mass not be allowed? Not saying *in* church but on the way there.

How else to get that sweet sweet buzz from the wine? Need an empty vessel.

Plus it’s a beautiful space that should be treated well. If people start bringing coffee it’s only a while before people start spilling coffee.

Is it 30 minutes? I always thought it was an hour before communion (and estimated at 30 minutes before mass)

I was taught 1 hour before communion. Maybe the thought is if you fast up to 30 min before mass, that will translate to 1 hour before communion.

I think the only one getting a buzz is the priest when he combines all of unused wine at the end and chugs it. I jest.

Also no other activity like looking at your phone, knitting, going through your purse, etc

You are there to participate. Don't even bring your phone

I am thankful that DCUM is not representative of Catholics in the DMV. The PP said s/he was going back to church after not attending for a long while. I assume this was an honest question about coffee. The general reaction here can be summed up as disgusted and smug. "How can you not know about fasting"? "Ugh, no, of course not." It sure seems like most posters on here don't want any new or non-expert Catholics at their mass. Remember the whole evangelism / welcoming thing Jesus and Paul talked about? This is so gross.
