The church Facebook page says coffee & donuts after mass, as a PP also said is offered at their Catholic Church. I’m assuming it’s a common thing to stoke socialization after mass. I just don’t know if these are generally complimentary or to bring cash to pay for them. |
What? Have you ever been to a Catholic Church? No. Never. This is not something you would forget. ![]() |
My thought was to stop on the way. It’s only a block away, so I wouldn’t finish a coffee in that time. Ideally I’d sip it throughout first half of mass. But not a dealbreaker by any means. |
When we were growing up everyone wore nice clothes or at least business casual to Catholic church. All the men and boys in suits and blazers, women and girls in dresses. Now it seems most come in regular clothes. So I wasn’t sure if the loosened modern dress code also loosened up the ability to bring a coffee. |
Definitely inappropriate in a Catholic Church. |
It varies by church. At ours there are voluntary donations but no one is actively checking. |
Catholics are expected to fast for 30 minutes before receiving communion, so snacks and drinks are not a thing during mass, except for tiny children who do not receive communion.
Plus it’s a beautiful space that should be treated well. If people start bringing coffee it’s only a while before people start spilling coffee. |
Coffee : No
Hidden whiskey flask: No problem |
Seriously, it’s good of you to ask. Sorry, no coffee during Mass. |
Good points. I knew something like a Frappuccino would obviously be uncouth but I wasn’t 100% sure about a small coffee. Thanks. We’ll do the coffee and donuts after mass. |
Is it 30 minutes? I always thought it was an hour before communion (and estimated at 30 minutes before mass) |
I was raised Catholic and never knew about fasting before mass! |
No. I'm an usher at my church (although it is Episcopal, not Catholic) and no one but me brings Starbucks -- and I get away with it because I'm there an hour early setting up and drinking it as I stuff programs. |
This. |
At my church they are complimentary but do accept “donut/coffee fund” donations. Sometimes I have cash and add $5, other times I don’t- no one bats an eye. |
