PP here. I think they have changed it because it was embarrassing for both the foundation and the university if someone who was selected as a Jefferson scholar wasn't admitted. It made the whole process less attractive than say, Morehead Cain -- it's a lot of work to go through if you don't ultimately get in. As I said above, last year all finalists who had applied RD were told on a call that they had been admitted. (The early applicants already knew they were in.)
Jefferson scholars automatically get Echols status. |
| What is the timeline for knowing it you are a finalist/semifinalist? My kid is applying to be a Jefferson scholar (12/2) but will only apply to UVA (regular decision, 1/5) if they are in the running for the scholarship. Crossing my fingers that the timelines work out. |
From their website. Must a nominee apply to UVA? Our scholarship selection process is completely separate from the University of Virginia’s Office of Undergraduate Admission. In order to be eligible to receive a scholarship, nominees must have applied to UVA and ultimately gain admission. Our scholarship competition does not consider whether a student applies Early Action, Early Decision, or Regular Decision. |
I’ve heard of Morehead-Cain semi-finalists not getting into CH as well. I think by the time finalists are announced, they notify admissions. |
Yes, I got all that. Hoping the timing of Jefferson advancement comes in ahead of the RD deadline. If no on Jefferson, UVA gets crossed off the list entirely. If we don't hear, then the kid will apply to UVA RD. |
A quick google will tell you that it’s a months long process—Jeff Scholars finalist not selected for final interviews until February. https://www.jeffersonscholars.org/scholarships/selection |
I get that. Perhaps "finalist" is the wrong word. They definitely let students know if they are not progressing before February. Ideally, they will send out that word in late December, but if not, so be it. |
| For those that had regional interviews, how long does it take to hear if you advance to finalist stage (or not)?? |
Depends on your region. My kid has first round interviews this Saturday morning. I believe our region already had some first round interviews last weekend. There is at least a second round. I’m not sure if there is a third. |
| What is Echols? Is it a separate application? My in state kid applied EA to UVA but never heard of Echols scholarship |
Thanks! Mine had first round last weekend. So I assume it will be a little while to get through this round. I wasn't sure if there are second round regional interviews or if they pick finalists to interview in the final rounds from just one round of regional interviews. Not really sure.....anyways, good luck! |
Echols is not a scholarship. That is their honors program out of the college of arts/sciences. The Jefferson Scholarship is what is being discussed in this thread, completely different. |
It’s not a scholarship. Admissions offers admitted students the opportunity to be an Echols Scholar - think of it like being a member of an honors college or a university. You can “Echol-out” and don’t have to pick a major, you get priority in class registrations, etc.. No $$ You don’t apply. You either offered the opportunity or not. I think William and Mary has something similar that they call the Monroe scholars? |
It’s not a scholarship. It’s an honors program that frees students from core requirements, gives registration priority, allows them to pursue an interdisciplinary major, etc. Students are invited during the admissions process |
Thank you! So if you're invited, it is in the acceptance letter? Or do early applicants, if invited, have to wait until RD decisions are released to find out? |
