Fabulous. Thanks! I felt confident that my kid had a shot at the school nomination and he is a strong interviewer if his essays get him to that round. BUT there are some truly amazing kids out there so not getting hopes up. Just awesome to be able to be part of even a bit of it. Appreciate your help -- so did your kid go to UVA? |
| My child is a nominee from an OOS high school. Does Jefferson Scholars have access to the common app data at all? Any thoughts on how to approach the essays? |
They're totally separate from UVA. |
| My child is also an nominee from their high school. Any sense of what the probability is of success? It’s a lot of work to get through the process! |
| Low odds on all of them and their sites have a lot of information on them. My DC was a Jefferson, Robertson, Wake Forest full-ride and Park semifinalist last year, didn’t get any. Didn’t make it to semi for Morehead, not sporty enough for them I don’t think. Full ride at another big state school, but turned down for one of the Ivies they got in. |
How were your kid’s overall acceptances ? Mine is also morehead cain snd Jefferson nominee and a semifinalist for Coke at this point…all of these scholarship applications take a lot of time and I hope don’t detract from their main applications |
Mine was a semi-finalist for Coke too. As you know it’s a ton of work and like applying to a bunch of extra colleges. It was a long stressful year navigating it all. They did well in regular, it all worked out in the end. Didn’t really want a large state school experience, really honed in on that during senior year. |
Happy it worked out for your kid! Mine seems to be going with the casting a wide net strategy at the moment |

I don't know why people compare themselves to these crazy talented kids.
My older daughters New York HS class had a kid with a perfect GPA and perfect SAT who never once in life did any studying. Sat in back, late a lot, ripped jeans. In 11th grade he was teaching a class at Colombia and advising a Nobel Prize winner on his next breakthrough. He literally was an IVY league teacher in HS. Guy looked like a stoner, he got forced to do commencement speech, his parents did not even show up. He got up and said I quote. I have the highest GPA so I got forced to come up p here, someone has the lowest GPA we all have GPAs they are just random numbers no one will care about in a few years. We all are getting Diplomas today so who care about GPA it is a useless random number. Then he walked off after 30 seconds. The next person was with a Tiger Mom and Dad and she had a big speech printed out, Mom and Dad all decked out, had their video stuff out as she was Salutatorian. She was ready to spit nails she was so mad looking for him belittling having a high GPA she went up there to brag about having second highest GPA and it all seemed silly that day. |
Bro, what are you even talking about ? |
I was following the sentiment until we got to teaching a class at Columbia in 11th grade and advising a Nobel Prize winner on their breakthrough. I’d love to learn more. |
| My DC is a Jefferson nominee too and they are flat out exhausted from writing 15 different essays and prompts just submitting applications. I don't even know how to begin to motivate them to keep writing essays at this point. Such a big honor to be nominated, but man the essays are just killers. |
Same here! My kid is grateful for the honor yet burnt out from all the applications and essay writing. It is a lot for even motivated kids!

| Kind of wish some of these scholarships used all the common app work that’s been done to get down to semifinalist - then invited you to do the essays etc |
I've been a regional interviewer for Jeffferson Scholars. We have no access to the kids' college applications. |
