Does anyone do the Cryptic Crossword in the Sunday paper? I want to learn how to do these.

Letter boxed disappointed me. The first time I solved it in two words, I thought I'd get confetti or something, but it's just basically the same message as if you solved it in four.

My 19yo DD away at college and 17 HS senior DD do the Wordle, Connections and Mini each day. It’s been great for staying connected while apart. Just did WPost Keyword today for the first time and shared it to our group chat - to much excitement (we are all pretty nerdy lol)

Today was TOUGH for me.

Today I woke up and I knew that the word started with e. Chose evoke, so I got the actual word on the second try. I really try to listen to my intuition rather than playing the first word mindlessly.

Today's was crazy hard!

This week is killing my stats.

Wordle 956 4/6*

I also do Connections, Wordle, and Spelling Bee daily. Sometimes I’ll do Sudoku, and I’m not a huge fan of Tiles or Letter Boxed.

Wait like you have gotten gold Monday through Sunday for multiple years?!? I am so impressed! It's usually a stupid Saturday puzzle that takes me down. Sundays I'm good at.

PP here. Yup, I did the math and I’ve gotten gold every day for over five years. Yes, I’m ridiculous.

Wow.

I usually only so much time to do them and some days I miss doing it so I'm just happy when I get a week of gold. But you've inspired me for the month of February, I'm now aiming for 29 perfect crosswords!

I LOVE cryptic crosswords. The best website I've found for them is Lovatts Puzzles: https://lovattspuzzles.com/online-puzzles-competitions/daily-cryptic-crossword/

It's a British site, so be careful because sometimes the spelling will trip you up (humour versus humor, for example).

You'll find that the functionality is a bit annoying, especially if you're used to the NYT crosswords where you can skip previously entered letters/answered clues, but this is still the best one I've found online. I've done some others that had better functionality but they were impossible to solve. These at least I generally can do. I also have a paperback book of them but they're also ridiculously hard.

I would do some reading on the basic kinds of cryptic clues because that will make it so much easier to do them. There are only so many types, and understanding how they work is key. Have fun! They're my new favorite thing.

I do the NY Sunday crossword; the weekday puzzles are too easy.

Always do spelling bee and generally get to genius.

Saturday is actually the hardest day. Sunday is a medium difficulty but longer.

I do Mini, Wordle, and Connections (my fave) in that order. Mini at 10pm when it drops, and the others usually during a menopausal wake-up at 2 a.m. as a PP said. Stopped doing Tiles, too mindless, but my 8yo likes it. Don’t like Spelling Bee or Soduku. I’d like to get back into doing the main crossword but I don’t have a games subscription.

I agree that Saturday is the hardest but I often think they're just no good. I'd prefer a clever one with some difficult clues to one with clues to phrases no one actually uses or super obscure people. The Saturday ones often just annoy me.

Sunday NYT is the same difficulty as Thursday. It’s just bigger in size. Saturday is the most difficult, then Friday, then Thursday, etc.

That’s what I used to think when I couldn’t do Saturday puzzles consistently. But it was just that I wasn’t good enough yet. Just keep trying and you will start to appreciate them! Friday and Saturday puzzles are my favorites.
