Thanks, I wasn't sure if they opened a couple spots for 7th grade or it was all waitlist. I figured it was a snowball's chance in hell |
We accepted a lottery slot (not HB, different school), did not respond by deadline assuming they would be removed because that was the instruction, and APS contacted us THREE MONTHS later to find out if we were taking slot. They aren’t exactly geniuses running this thing.
And 100% there are admin transfers to HB for “horrible bullying” and whatever else APS feels like doing. It’s MADDENING. Why would child be transferred to HB instead of different neighborhood school?!? I am not for bullying obviously. |
I'm sure there have been some but some people act like it's rampant and it's not. People blab in Arlington |
Maybe not rampant, but enough to know there is room for corruption and favors. |
If anyone gets a text or email telling them their kid has a spot, let us know. I’m torn over mine going to either Arlington Tech or HB. I’d prefer our zoned school. |
Anyone with experience who can comment on whether these do sometimes come early? I know they said something like by 5pm or 9pm, but I'm also the PP who wondered why this took a week generally. Computer generates the lists, unveil the names, and hit send. Boom, that seems like two business days at most.
Should we be hitting refresh this morning or is it really usually end of the day? DC really would love to know where they might be heading to high school. |
Get rid of sibling preferences and make it so a child can only win a lottery once. The ATS to HB Woodlawn pipeline makes no sense. |
Then why the quotation marks, which insinuates you don’t think the claims are genuine. |
Sure it can. Kids develop skills in elementary school and change as they become tweens. |
The philosophies of the schools are polar opposites. ATS students should be rejected out of hand for spots at HBW. |
Ok, to be fair if you ever applied to ATS then you shouldn’t be eligible for HB |
But not much room, tbh. My kid has been at HB for a couple of years and the only time he has reported a new student joining his grade has correlated with a student leaving. And that has happened twice. So even if the fix is in, which it’s not (those kids both reported getting off a waitlist!), you’re talking at most a couple of kids out of thousands who somehow benefit from this rampant corruption and favor trading. |
True, but many parents simply like the small size of HB. It’s like a small private school in many respects. Like GDS in DC, but free. |
No, they like that they can get their kids out of the neighborhood schools that have more poor browns. The entire thing is a farce. Agree with PP -- if you ever applied to ATS, you should be disqualified from applying for HB. |
It's not like ATS doesn't have "poor browns" |
