Arlington lottery questions

Remember years ago that then-SB member Nancy Van Doren's twins both magically somehow got spots at HB. There wasn't a sibling preference, but of all the kids applying from their school it somehow worked out that they both got in.

Neither of my kids is interested in HB so this isn't sour grapes, it's simply an APS parent who finds HB a huge waste of resources.

there is a twin preference at HB. if one gets in, the other does too. same for triplets.

Does anyone know if HB offers sessions for admitted students before we have to make the decision whether to accept?

I've declined to tell my 5th grader that we put him in the HB lottery because he'll either be upset about not staying with friends and/or could end up excited about a school where he can't attend, so we'd need to have that discussion with him if he is offered a spot. It didn't seem worth having the conversation until it is a real option. Are there sessions to help a 5th grader decide?

All kids that are initially accepted spend a whole day there, shadowing another kid. It's some time in February.

If you get off the wait list, they try and get you in to spend a day there, but they also want you to make a decision within 2-3 days.

Notifications on the 29th, which is weird since the lottery is computer generated so you'd think it could go out right away.
Decisions required by Feb 5th.

Strategically, unless you're interested in more than one program at the high school level, it seems like you'd want to accept even if it's before a visit day. You can always change your mind and go to your zoned school.

PP again. I’m guessing we will see this with many Arl Tech families until they hear from TJ. Or really anyone waiting for decisions from privates as well.

Its why someone told me there could be waitlist movement in the spring once all other options are on the table.

I was assuming the delay was to cross check the applicants to ensure they were still enrolled in APS.

Yes we know people whose kid is currently in private, applied to HB and will take that slot if offered. Otherwise it’s back to private. Which seems shady to me but hey it’s allowed!

Yep, one slot. It’s a whole lot less shady than the nebulous criteria for administrative transfers.

I wasn't paying attention but you could go back and watch the lottery recording. 7th isn't an entry year for HB so spots would be based on the number of 6th graders who decided not to return.

I'm assuming that these spots will come up on a rolling basis as kids move away, move to private or choose to return to their home school. The lottery is to order the waitlist, not to fill already open spots.
