Arlington lottery questions

1. When they give sibling preference, does it count if you’re applying to kindergarten and the sibling is a younger not in kindergarten yet? They would be concurrently enrolled a year later if both got in.

2. For ATS, when VPI and sibling preference are separated, which category is counted if both are applicable? Just VPI?

3. Trying to figure out our odds with ATS, it seems like 7% without any preference?

I didn’t think they still did sibling preference? But to your question, of course they’re not Going to include a child who’s not even in school yet… How are they even know if you wanted to apply for that child? Thinking that way, every child with a sibling would be counted that way.

I don’t think a kid in VPI gets an older sibling in.

Also, you most likely don’t qualify for VPI.

I'm trying to make this make sense. Are you applying for VPI and kindergarten in the same year? Then no, if the VPI kid gets in, it won't give the K kid an advantage because the lottery will have already happened.

2. For ATS, when VPI and sibling preference are separated, which category is counted if both are applicable? Just VPI?

It doesn't matter, either would get the child a spot in K.

3. Trying to figure out our odds with ATS, it seems like 7% without any preference?

Yes, without VPI or sibling preference, ATS odds are always extremely low.

I'm not sure I understand your question, but my understanding is that if your current kindergartner gets in this year through the lottery, then your current preschooler would have sibling preference when they reach kindergarten age.

Along those same lines, what are the odds of getting into HB Woodlawn?

Well depends on how many students from your elementary school apply and how many slots your school is allotted. You can find the numbers here:

And how much the teachers/APS are willing to backdoor your kid in. There is always the HB admin loophole.

Based on last year’s numbers my kid has <10% chance of getting a seat at HBW.

Does anyone actually watch the lottery??

This is horrible but I know it happens. We know someone bragging that she knows her 5th grader is going to get in. Older sibling goes there. Not that I understand how they rig lottery or just replace kids once they see the list.

Um, not sure how this would work. We had a kid there and our second went in the lottery in fifth grade and was number #34 or something.

I really do not think this is true. I am probably way closer to admin at HB than others posting on this thread and I truly cannot imagine them doing this.

They absolutely transfer kids there who are having issues in their home school. I know of 2 cases. On the one hand I empathize and on the other hand it’s not fair either.
