How much does a contested divorce actually cost?

Anonymous
I divorced in NY and I was order to pay $1500 a month for 2 kids on a $107,000 gross salary and the kids were on my insurance as well. NY is a ridiculous state to get a divorce. AND in NY even with 50/50 a primary custodial parent needs to be designated.

It seems like VA and MD are great states to get a divorce in...

wow that's close to 30% of your monthly gross pay.

Correct answer. Marital assets are split. Custody is also split. Because his income is higher than yours, he will pay some child support, but not very much, since it's 50/50 custody and the CS is a formula.
Forget about alimony it's not the 19th century! Women have full time jobs and support themselves.
What exactly are you contesting?

She will absolutely get some alimony. ANd she should.
And this is not an anti-husband thing. I know women who pay alimony to their ExH.

I would think about it another way. How bad must things be that a woman with 3 kids and little financial security is looking to divorce rather than sucking it up and staying?

+1
So much judgement here for the woman wanting to leave.

+2

thinking positively for you and your children during this time, OP

Why should the person asking for the divorce have a right to maintain the same standard of living that they had before the divorce?

That's actually pretty good, my husband had to pay that on much less income.

Then how is the person making that much payment supposed to live?!

Such a silly comment.

It has to do with the children. If there are children then the court wants to make sure their standard of leaving is maintained. I think you are asking about those women for example married to very wealthy men and who had no kids in the marriage and then get huge alimony if they file for divorce. If you are referring to the latter I don't know the reasoning behind it to be honest. My wife told me that the new lady who moved in next door to us is unemployed has no kids and is recently divorced. Rumors are that she was married to a very wealthy guy.
