This was the original "both sides" mistake. We never should have allowed the south to "come back".

Brilliant statement. Then I guess we didn’t need to have a war at all, since literally Lincoln’s entire purpose for fighting the war was to “preserve the Union.” Guess he should have just let them leave.

Yes, he should have. After freeing the enslaved people and offering them refuge.

Show me anywhere else where the losers to a war put up statues of their heroes. It’s the same as Germans putting up a hitler statue and claiming it’s their history. Why would you want to celebrate that?

VA is full of racist POSs. Fewer now than when this statue was erected but they still exist. Please refer to the POSs defending the statue and fighting to keep it.

The statue, unveiled in 1914, features a bronze woman, crowned with olive leaves, standing on a 32-foot pedestal, and was designed to represent the American South. According to Arlington, the woman holds a laurel wreath, a plow stock and a pruning hook, with a Biblical inscription at her feet that says: “They have beat their swords into plough-shares and their spears into pruning hooks.”

A laurel wreath and a quote about ending war and going back to productive life? Whoever wants this removed is an ignoramus.

The quote honors the dead “heroes”. I think we can all agree that the confederates were not heroes.

Turning swords into plowshares? Please explain (better).

Why would you think that? Most of us (Americans) agree that the Confederates were not heroes, but some of us apparently disagree and wish to continue honoring people who fought on the side of preserving the legal right to own people.

It wasn’t the average southern Joe on the street that pushed for war. To condemn the entire south for the Civil War is just wrong.

True! For example, in many places, the "average southern Joe" was an enslaved person.

...and don't forget how many of the top 1% rich elites were serving wearing a uniform and engaging in battles! They sure did sacrifice!

So they can do that on private property and we can disparage them.

Not to mention that they weren't the ones turning their weapons of war into farm implements, it was the victors.

I'd never paid attention to the statue (acknowledging my privilege) until this thread but since I have degrees in the Classics, I thought it was time to see what imagery was on the monument. Wow! Talk about unsubtle unrepentance and white supremacist! And that quote in Latin! Another WOW! I could write a tome about its inclusion on the state but, suffice to say, it alone makes it clear the monument is not about peace and reconciliation. Of course, what would you expect when the artist was, himself, a Confederate?

This was in that lovely Wikipedia article the 'you're trying to erase history' PP referenced. For sure, this statue doesn't represent white supremacy and heroic people willing to die to keep others enslaved.

The inclusion of the "faithful black servants" was purposeful. Sculptor Moses Ezekiel included them because he wanted to undermine what he called the "lies" told about the South and slavery in Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel Uncle Tom's Cabin and wished to rewrite history "correctly" (his word) to depict black slaves' support for the Confederate cause.

Did you see the fallen woman who represents the South? Descriptions I've seen describe her as 'leaning' on a shield bearing the name 'Consitution'. Looks like she's taking a dump on it or maybe wiping her butt with it. With the skill the artist has shown, if he wanted to show her leaning on it, he would have done something different. And, 'leaning' isn't in keeping with the rest of the imagery. Defacating on it certainly is.

Uh no, that's not what it looks like. Go wash your brain.

DP. Now that the PP has mentioned it, I can't unsee it. She's looking to see what kind of log she laid. She's definitely NOT leaning on the shield, the tension in her muscles are wrong as is the tilt of her body. That was definitely deliberate.

Just like the 1/6 insurrectionists who shat on democracy.

Bet you'd be on the side of the British during the Revolution wouldn't you?

I’m on the side of the US. I have family members who fought for independence and others who fought against the southern traitors. And I’d fight the 1/6 insurrectionists if I had to.
