W&M has a "One Year M.S. Program for W&M CS Undergraduate Students (4+1)". A heck of an option for a kid already coming in with AP/IB credits.

https://www.wm.edu/as/computerscience/graduate/

? a lot of colleges have those programs, including UMD. And yea, my kid went in with 58 credits, and will be graduating early with a masters.

The question was whether W&M has a CS program. No one asked about UMD.

My company won’t even hire an intern from a college that isn’t ABET accredited so we don’t recruit or consider W&M for internships.

I’m sure W&M is a great school just not for CS.

I don't think this is true. I work for Amazon Web Service (AWS) and we don't care where you get your degree from. If you can pass the on-site interview, with actual real world scenarios, we will hire you, even if you graduate from WM.

Does the acceptance rate change if you are trying to computer science in WM?

They graduate fewer than 100 students per year with a degree (BA) in CS, so not a huge pool to draw from on an anonymous board.

DS who graduated in '22 has two close friends who did CS degrees at WM (DS did the data science minor which involves some courses in the CS department). It's a small, but strong and growing program. Both CS grads are working at DMV tech companies, doing well. They strike me as very personable/professional young adults--definitely more 'polished' than the tech stereotype fwiw. They said that everyone in their graduating class had competing offers before graduation--not sure if that's hyperbole or not. They loved WM and had internships throughout. Don't know their salaries, but they both are living on their own in apartments and bought new cars so I'm guessing pretty good.

No--they don't accept by major. But it might be an advantage if they are trying to grow the major. Also, there's a slight male advantage overall so you at least don't experience the increased competition that male CS applicants sometimes experience elsewhere.

ok, but the PP threw in ""One Year M.S. Program for W&M CS Undergraduate Students (4+1)". A heck of an option for a kid already coming in with AP/IB credits. ".. that's not a big deal.

If you need to go instate, but can't make UVA or VT, then do it.

It's harder to get into W&M then VT.

not for CS.

True. My friend's kid got into WM for CS, but was waitlisted at VT and rejected at UVA.

4.5gpa female, varsity bball, went to a "diverse" NOVA public school.

Damn my daughter doesn't stand a chance at VT for CS. 4.3 GPA, no scores, Varsity sports, and diverse NOVA public.

she stands a small chance, but if she hasn’t applied EA then it’s even smaller. No scores is the real killer with that GPA. we were told that Eng likes to see at least a 750 for math out of NoVA kids.

What about ACT math for NoVA kids

Isn't VT test optional? Is it indefinite or just through 2024?

So people on this board have no idea about CS at WM and yet they can inject their own opinions as if they are facts.

They can't help it.

Anyway, 93 CS grads in 2022, and 95 in 2023.

No. You just apply to the college of arts and sciences. Some majors are competitive entry. Business tops that list, but kids are also screened/need departmental permission to declare IR/ Global studies (my kid is double majoring in both and they met with her before she declared, but the big issue was being on track with decent grades in Econ (for IR) and foreign language (for both) and a couple other majors. But CS is not a competitive entry major at WM

You’d want a 35 to correspond to the 750. My kid went to TJ, and at the info session, they said they wanted to see an A in BC (even if that’s midterm senior year). That’s a heavy lift and a TJ and I know a kid who got into VT with a B in BC from TJ. But it was a female applicant with a lot going for her in things like applied research.

No way. Depending on the test curve a 750 is about 3 missed questions, +/- Concordance Table says a 750 math is a 35.

Sure. But if you have a 4.3, you really should show them something in SAT/ACT math. Especially if any of your A-s/B+s/Bs are in math or a related stem class like physics.
