+1

And FFS, PLEASE do NOT wear a Princeton shirt or cap when you graduated more than 10 years ago, you look silly.

What? People wear their college gear (Michigan, Notre Dame, Umd) well into retirement. What is wrong with Princeton, other than they are way way to enthusiastic to wear orange?

Is this the golf hat we keep hearing about?

It is Scottish, so it makes sense.

I don't care for baseball caps on overweight middle-aged men so the flat cap would be preferable to that.

I'm into the flat cap as a look - hey Newsies - but unfortunately it (like the fedora) has been adopted by some odious people so he really needs to put thought into the rest of his outfit if he's going to do it. Also it has to be big enough for his face.

Consider a knit beanie with a brim, instead.

Who does he think he is? Does he have an acting roll on peaky blinders?

OP already said her DH wanted it mostly for shade and rain protection, he just wants a more age appropriate fashion but perhaps overcorrected!

Most men have short hair, or no hair, so maybe it feels weird for them to go out w/o something on their head, like they feel to exposed to elements without it. My dad is like that, he won't just walk out the house bareheaded, he has a collection of ballcaps by the door and he will throw one one when leaving. He is a boomer, so maybe that is part of they, they are the generation that saw their dads wear hats everywhere.

My bald husband has had skin cancers removed from his head so yeah he wears a hat most of the time.

This thread is hilarious. I went to a college with a huge Irish-American population and everyone wore those hats, from professors down to students.

This was when people were way more preppy - wool sweaters (roll neck or fishman) were probably as common as sweatshirts on my campus. Barn jackets were as ubiquitous then as fleeces are now.

And fwiw, J. Crew is selling flat caps right now.

No, OP is talking about the Scottish/British flat hat. My DH wears one, especially when driving. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_cap

oh.my.god. we'll speak slowly. We know the flat hat. We know the driving cap. We don't know why those are better than the "golf cap" because nobody is posting pictures of the golf cap. Unless the two pictures above nail it, then I seriously prefer the golf cap.

My late DH looked great in any hat. He wore whatever clothes he wanted and didn’t care one bit what others thought. He always looked great. I never cared what he wore.

My DH is 55. He put on a cap like that and I shuddered. He not only looked like an old man, he looked exactly like his dad - and I was totally turned off! Sure, he can wear whatever he wants but I'm not snuggling up to him as long as he's the spitting image of his dad <shudder>. I'm perfectly fine with him wearing baseball caps. He's got a bunch of them. I'm also fine with him wearing a fishing hat or a sun hat or a jacaru, just not that flat cap.

There are actually many caps with more ballcapish fabric. Also so many pins to hip it up.

My bald 50 something dh has three caps from Boston scally and I actually look forward to the fall/winter changeover to these caps from baseball hats - I think a lot of guys looks great in them.
