Teachers -- do you want a pie?

I'm happy to make a pie for someone that actually wants it, but I am finding it a little hard to believe that all the teachers actually want a pie. IME, there are a lot of people that don't like pie, a bunch of people that prefer their own home-made pie, and some people who just won't eat anything cooked in other people's kitchens. I wish the PTA had, instead of guaranteeing a pie for each teacher, just asked teachers to sign up if they affirmatively wanted a pie (and saying what kind of pie they want -- some people hate pumpkin, others hate pecan, some hate apple, most hate mince...).
I usually love our PTA, so trying not to criticize, but just really curious if these initiatives are actually popular with the teachers.

How about a $10 gift certificate for teachers instead? Food can be a tricky gift.

What exactly don’t you trust?

Are you afraid the student’s mom will nefariously tamper with it? Unlikely.

Do you believe a pie purchased in a grocery store or bakery was prepared in a cleaner kitchen? Lol. Not a chance.
Dog fur or cat fur in it if they have pets. Some people let cats jump up in their kitchen counters.

+1

Some people don’t wash the hands, lick the spoons, double dip, stick their finger in the batter for a taste, cough or sneeze on the food, have cats walking on the countertops, dog hair everywhere.

Some people are not very hygienic. Potlucks can be scary. I always ask who made what before I eat it.

Get pies at Costco. They are huge, reasonably priced and delish.

I am curious about this. What don't you trust about people baking a pie? That they lick their fingers and would make you sick? That they would sneak in peanuts and you're allergic? I am seriously asking. If someone went to the trouble to make and donate a baked item, I am going to assume only the best about them. That they're clean, they're kind, they're generous. And if the baked good sucks (I also bake and am pretty good at it) I give them ALL THE UPs for trying! Baking something for someone is so nice!

Anyway, my 2 cents. My kids' PTAs have never done anything like this. I now work at a school and would be happy with a pie.

Being kind and generous does not mean a person is clean and hygienic.

As a teacher, I eat mostly pre-package food. The PTA does many breakfast, lunch and food events. Many teachers only eat only store bought foods. I am not alone. And if you make something, please make sure it looks appetizing and garnished nicely in a nice tray or platter. I’ve seen many unappetizing platters and won’t even touch it. Appearance matters.

I feel the same! I used to work in restaurants through college and some of them are DISGUSTING!! So gross. And, some of the people who cook your food, can also be a bit gross.

Store bought pies aren't necessarily going to be 'cleaner', IMO.

Eat the pie or don't, but I wouldn't summarily dismiss a homemade pie. Anyone willing to bake something gets credit from me, just like the PP says.

I like pie and would appreciate one to take home for our holiday meal. However, it has to be against a backdrop of generally feeling appreciated at the school. Otherwise, it will feel like apology pie.

Meh, I’d eat apology pie too.

Or a grade bribery pie.

Pies made for Costco is not the same as a restaurant. They are mass produced in an automated factory. That is why they are so cheap. Very little human interaction. It’s cleaner than most hoses. A restaurant is different. Restaurants have health and food safe standards to get their food license. A home baker has none!

Sure! I’m in a school with no PTA in another district so anything is better than nothing. I love pecan pie.

Most people will eat a store bought pie. Only a few will eat a homemade one if they know who made it. Many homemade goodies go in the trash when teachers get home.

Pies are made with pork lard that some teachers won’t eat. They often contain poisons like soy or vegetable oils also. Please don’t.

I'm the pp who also doesn't have a PTA. The admin does their best but can't really provide what other schools can to boost teacher morale. I would absolutely love something like this. If your school PTA has a huge budget, consider sponsoring even a tiny teacher treat for a Title I school--I guarantee it will be appreciated!

That’s crazy.

Thoughtless, wasteful, crazy.

Homemade is better than store bought. Only a fancy bakery tops homemade.

If you are too paranoid to eat homemade baked goods you need therapy. Truly.

No cleanliness standards, and usually a giant 150 pound shedding dog, or a cat or two climbing around. No thanks.

+1 Especially after covid. People usually think they are better bakers than they actually are.
