OP here. There's some hyperbole on this thread, as usual, but people are generally telling me what I thought so I appreciate it.

To the people who are incredulous that UVA and WM's average GPA is now about 4.4, they're not wrong. I know it goes up senior year, etc., but essentially you have to be top 5% of the class-ish to be accepted.

The VA SCHEV report spells it out in great detail: https://research.schev.edu//enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp

To the person who is asking what are Scattergrams, they are in Naviance and I trust what those say as well, to some extent. UVA looks like basically no chance, WM looks tough but maybe, and Tech is a decent but still crapshoot of a chance.

Good luck to everyone! I'm still very proud of my kids whatever happens. They will do great no matter what.

Your kid will get into all of those schools.

It's worth applying to UVA. I know a 1580 (NMS), 4.3 GPA rejected ED to UVA, so you never know. But I'd say confident yes to W&M and VT.

UVA and WM are a complete waste of time. I have it on good a good source that nearly every applicant in APS, FCPS, and LCPS gets tossed out the window at UVA at the get go if you aren’t in the top 5% of your class.

VT MAYBE, but the business school only admit 20% and you need to be in above 93% for math SAT. They don’t care much about English scores.

DC has 3.75 weighted (3.25 UW), 1500 SAT, 10APs, 2 post APs (CS), 1 DE.

We just plugged in stats into college vine and it told us that DS has no Reaches. VT is on his list (Collegevine says it's a match) and he's not interested in W&M. Is UVA a possibility at all as a reach or is it just a wasted app? ED maybe?

With all those APs the GPA is pretty bad. Did your kid do very very poorly freshman year and then just knock it out od the park 10th and 11th?

Best to be realistic and shoot for VT.

One thing people are not considering is that for all these schools the published “average” GPAs are their FINAL GPA. Right now all of the colleges are just looking at 9-11. Presumably kids with heavy AP loads will graduate with a GPA higher than what their transcript shows today.

I wouldn't presume that, since lots of seniors let off the gas in second semester.

Probably offered admission at all three barring really shitty essays.

Come on, now.

DCUM posters live in a parallel universe where being a top 0.01% student for the entire country isn’t enough to get into a public flagship in their own state.

I straight up do not believe in the existence of these alleged perfect students who get rejected everywhere.

It’s trolling to increase people’s anxiety.

There’s only 1000 people who score 1600 out of the pool of all test takers- we are talking literally millions of kids sit for the SAT.

This is a confirmed fact. Final GPA for statistical reporting is all that is submitted for CDS.

This is actually very true as well, but I’d say for highly competitive students letting off the gas isn’t in their work ethic. I’d say UVA applicants are wired to do their best while JMU probably sees a decline.

Then you can say "for the CDS" but NOT for "all" the published GPAs. There's another thread right now that lists the EA stats for first round admits at Auburn - those are NOT final GPA's, obviously only junior year GPAs. Many many other schools tout the GPA's for their new admits long before their senior year is over.

This is not true with those stats!

- mom of college sophomore, so recent experience. He got into VT with a 4.3, didn’t apply to W&M as it didn’t appeal to him. But many classmates didn’t get into either with similar stats. And we’re not even in FCPS or other NOVA systems.
