Settle a dispute - shorts on a plane

Anonymous
it's normal / fine for people to wear whatever they want.

What was weird was one time my FIL wore shorts and my MIL got mad at him about it. My MIL was the one we all thought had the problem in the situation.

I wouldn’t but only because I’m always freezing in airports/on planes. Otherwise I definitely would.

Came here to say this

I wouldn't- am always wearing layers on planes because you start off warm then end up freezing. 18 year old son wears shorts

There are germs and dirt everywhere. Can’t avoid them unless you live in a bubble. FYI, I’m fine with shorts on a plane. I’m all about whatever makes you comfortable.

(And as a former NTSB employee I'll point out that shorts are less safe in an emergency.)

THIS. Cover skin and wear lace-up shoes that aren’t going to fly off on the inflatable slide.

If I have to make an emergency exit from a plane, my shoes falling off are the least of my worries.

I find planes freezing and dirty. I fly a ton and have almost always worn sweatpants and hoodies. Comfy and keel me warm and covered!

So is most women's business wear and yet female professionals seem to fly no problem all the time.

Yeah, and I wear jeans with spandex which will melt to me if there's a fire. Just saying. A slide will tear up your legs.

Anti-shorts on plane, similar reasons. I worked in seat and plane certification for an airline and also dealt with maintenance. You want cotton or wool on your legs if something happens. My family has designated travel outfits that meet this requirement (although I would never tell the kids why). Closed-toe shoes are also a must.

Also, from the maintenance side: those seats have dry pee on them. FYI.

Then you should know that you have very little chance of surviving a true emergency, and if there is one, your attire won't be the thing that kills you.

Also, as microbiologist, I must tell you that pee is very low in bacteria or any contagious agents. Not poo, but if it's all dried, the chance of catching anything is also very low.

This is an example of how partial expertise makes you fixated on the wrong risks.

If the shorts are too short you can see the snakes on the plane.

You sound crazy, OP. People should wear what makes them comfortable. Men in shorts are fine because it covers the back of their thighs. I think women in short shorts on airplanes are crazy because I don't want my bare skin touching the disgusting airplane seat, but men's shorts cover that part of their leg. It's fine. RELAX.

hahahaha, L-I-A-R

I don’t care what anyone else wears but I’m usually too cold to wear anything that doesn’t cover my legs. What I’m more surprised about is how many germaphobes there are. How do some of you function out in the world?

Something he'd wear on a golf course (yes) or something he'd wear to the gym (no). I'd worry more about being cold but that's his problem.

I usually won't do it only because it can get really cold on a plane. It has zero to do with shorts being too informal or anything else. And if it's the hottest part of the summer I will probably still wear shorts on quick flight.
