| Where did this happen? Anyone who works with kids knows this oversight or slipup or purposeful omission was absolutely inexcusable. |
Oh yes, I'm sure that no one will ever mix up a pile of medals thanks to your diligent work passing links around and screaming about racism. And it won't make white folks avoid contact with PoC to avoid being publicly shamed for their mistakes. Excellent slacktivism. |
Mmkay. What does it mean? |
Can an apology ever be enough? For what it is worth, the judge in question wrote a long apology letter to the family within days after the event. She allegedly also gave the girl her medal the same day. Unfortunately, Gymnastics Ireland didn't share that letter of apology with the family. If they had passed the letter on to the family within a week, and issued an apology on behalf of the organization, would that have been enough? |
Here comes the racist masquerading as a victim |
Wow, I'm PP and by no means does giving her a medal now make up for what happened. I meant with my comment that I hope she does not take this to heart and get discouraged in herself or the sport. Maybe I should have been clearer in my comment but you shouldn't jump to worse conclusion. |
If I was the parent, I’d want every adult on that stage barred from competitions for life |
I'm not a horse person but it seems pretty crappy regardless of race to have 11 entrants and 10 ribbons. And really bad when race comes into it. |
That was my honest impression as well, I admit. But I'm also white. And believe black people when they say it's probably not an accident EVERY time. What I wonder is if the woman is just so... untuned?... to not looking at black people she subconsciously doesn't think they count - or if it's intentional. |
DP. Are you kidding? SMH |
Omg I am DYING. You win the internet today! |
So we should never speak of this again and no one should ever learn about it in the future. Right, Governor? |
I am not kidding and I am genuinely wondering why you are surprised. I am not advocating giving a ribbon to everyone -narrow it to three people, say- but when giving ribbons out becomes an exercise in singling out a loser v celebrating the winners, which 10/11 does, something is wrong. |
| But, I wouldn't want a sympathy medal. |
Huh? Races and cultures didn't mingle as much back then because it was a lot harder to travel from Africa to Ireland 100 years ago. Even 50 years ago, the cost to travel long distances was prohibitive for most people. |
