How many hours a week do you actually work?

Anonymous
250k, sometimes 60 hrs/week, some other times, 5 hrs/week. On average about 25-30 hrs/week.

Management is a joke job

Senior management at an NGO making $140k.

I probably work 50 hours/wk. Much more if you count the time rolling over work problems in my head, happy hours or other evening events with colleagues, and work related travel. My schedule is flexible, and mostly WFH, but most days I’m logged on 7-5 with minimal breaks.

I make in the 80s as a teacher, I keep it to 35 typically, 40 when it’s busy.

My fellow teachers, find a way to do less. I’m considered a very good teacher btw.

Wow these teachers work so much. WHY? Why is it necessary to work so many hours? Something is wrong with this model. Unfortunately women like to make things more complicated than they need to be and come up with made up work. My guess is it’s a result of being a female-dominated industry.

I flip my laptop on at 830 and turn it off at 5. Sometimes I work more sometimes less. Last year I think I made around 298k.

What do you do? Sounds amazing!

I work in inside sales. I basically do all the “work” behind the scenes for very successful outside reps.

I’ve worked myself into a very good spot after years is doing this. Most of my colleagues on average make around 120-176k

I work 40-60 hours a week. The work is project based so a heavy incentive to work more. I earn $1m+ per year but it’s pretty intense so looking to reduce the load over the next couple of years.

Before I did this, I worked in admin at various organizations, and there was ALWAYS down time. In a 40 hour work week, I probably worked 4-5 hours a day, tops, but it was spread out over the 8-9 hours I was in my office.

In my current career, there is no down time while I am actively "working" with clients. I have 2-3 cancellations per week for whatever reasons, so occasionally I get an unexpected break, but there is very little time to goof off at work the way I used to in my nonprofit days. Probably a good thing, ultimately.

How much do you make? I'm in school for an MSW planning to go into private practice or maybe a small group practice.

I have great work life balance and able to schlep my kids to all their activities.

But I also do a lot of laundry, gardening and cooking. So, I’m working 40-50 hours.

Similar to me. Fully remote and $150k, 20-30 hours. I do household chores when I’m not working, but I mostly enjoy them. Pretty awesome setup overall. I’m in a field where I could double my salary if I go in-person/hybrid and double my working hours, but that’s not a lifestyle I want.

I would imagine that this sampling is pretty biased toward the people that work fewer hours. Because that's who can be on DCUM.

Dh and I have the best set up. We live in CST, my company is HQed in EST and his in PT. So it ends up with me working about 5 hours between 7-4 my time, him working around 5 hours between 10-6 our time. We both WFH full time. We can easily align free time midday to garden together, grab lunch, take a kid to an appt, walk the dog together. Or if a kid is sick, we can split the day caring for them.

I make $115k and he makes $170k. 32yo, kids are 3 and 1 so we love the stolen couple moments during the work day. Neither of us will probably ever leave our jobs.

I net $85k this year, but I also didn’t work for an extended period this summer because my dad died. This year it’ll probably be closer to $100k. I’m in a small group practice, am paneled with a few insurance companies, and don’t specialize in any particular population or problem.

This board will consider that a “low salary” for a master’s degree but I love what I do and feel well compensated for it. I’m also a social worker and started in community mental health. I switched to this practice when I got my clinical license. We hire associates but the pay and experience in community mental health was better.

Scenario:
I collect 150 5-page papers. I am required to leave comments. It takes me 10 minutes per paper, so that’s 25 hours of grading for that assignment alone. I am required to grade two *meaningful* assignments a week.

I get 24 minutes a day that are unstructured and away from other people. That’s 24 minutes a day to grade those papers, grade other assignments, prep my lessons, respond to all emails, etc.

I am sincerely curious: how can I make this job easier? How can I cut hours?

I’m not being snarky. I genuinely would like to know so I don’t quit.

- written on my one 24-minute break today. That’s also my time for lunch and unwinding, which I am doing now before I spend the rest of the time planning.
