MCEA and Jennifer Martin act like a bunch of lunatics at Council yesterday

Otherwise the narrative becomes "teachers are so underpaid".

OK, maybe they are. But let's have that discussion when framed with the actual numbers.

A teacher with 10 years experience and a masters (which you have to get) would earn 80,287.

That is not a bad salary for 10 months.

Maybe it should be more, but it is also higher than many people think, and is more than many Montgomery county residents make.

Lol do you even hear yourself? Someone with ten years experience and a masters should be happy with 80k in Montgomery County? My starting salary with a masters and zero experience was 93k. What an insult and a joke.

And only a teacher that has all the experience in MCPS would get that pay. I have 20 years experience but I’m only paid for 8 because I am new to MCPS.

Let’s also not forget what else teachers deal with. In the same week I was hit with a piece of classroom furniture, threatened twice with a gun (by 2 different students), and cursed at twice (by 2 different students). This is not worth $80k/yr

I’ll happily take a pay-cut to move to another county/state if it means never having to deal with miserable MoCo parents ever again.

Agreed. It never should have been an us vs them thing… MoCo parents didn’t care. They don’t care. They want to continue to belittle and berate teachers all while demanding everything from them. So entitled. I moved here from a different part of the country and the difference between parents from there and here is just… sad. The difference is significant. Do better, MoCo. People all over are doing a much better job… I know that’s super hard for you to hear or grasp, but it’s just true.

It's not the parents throwing a hissy fit at a Council meeting, is it? Who's entitled exactly?

DP, but how obvious is this? You're the problem if you CAN'T see it... just parents throwing hissy fits on a daily basis. Parents throwing teachers under the bus constantly. Parents blaming everyone else but themselves for their kid's behavior/grades. The list is endless.

All you have to do is go one thread over where a parent is upset a teacher had the audacity to give a student a detention for saying a very inappropriate word. Empathy is severely lacking.

It’s not worth any amount of money. Are they going to make you sit in a sharing circle with the students with guns?

I am reading this a few ways. County Council honors teachers during teacher appreciation week in the middle of a teacher shortage by not funding a pay raise/school budget? Come on. That is terrible optics and should rightly be called out. My feeling is that the county council wants to use the tax money for their own self promoting pet projects without dedicating funds to schools permanently.

For the nth time, teachers will get their raises.

Every time the parent entitlement issue comes up, I go back to one very vocal MoCo parent...during the pandemic, took a picture of their kid still sleeping when they were supposed to be in class....posted it online and somehow thought it was a great way to roast the district/teachers when not even stopping to realize, they are the parent. They could easily wake their kid up and have them sign-into class. So MoCo. So, so, so pathetic. Everyone else's fault but the person who is actually at fault.

Holy cow. I’m a teacher and didn’t realize someone posted something like that! Are you kidding me? Do you think we have magical powers or something? Oh I guess we should have called jr to wake him up on top of everything else!!

Nothing is ever anyone’s fault around here. And it’s the best when people try to gaslight others into thinking teachers actually have any power to change anything and that we cause all the problems the schools are having.

That's awful, and I'm glad I don't have that work environment. That's also a failure of the administration, not you. They should be enforcing rules. None of that is OK, but they're allowing it.

I remember this. So cringeworthy. The lack of self-awareness from this individual in general is astounding, but this particular post was above and beyond. The craziest part is: there are people who agree with him. (Most of them are failed Board Member candidates so do with that what you will)

They are funding MCPS budget, they just aren't increasing it as much as requested.

They are funding it, as always, and well past maintenance of effort.

You filed charges with the police? These are law enforcement matters.

People have no idea how bad it is.
The state changed the law last year. Police won’t do anything regarding minors unless they absolutely must. I was shoved by a high schooler and fell down. kid just got a ‘talk’. For the person who thinks hanging around in an abusive environment for TEN YEARS until we pay for our own masters and survive to reach that 80K- get wrecked. Parent your kids!!! Please!
