I always stock up on things at the Mikasa outlet - they are perfect for these types of things and always so treasured.

Traditional in which culture? Most people I know would be insulted.

You had 20 extra place settings? How many did you own?

Around 80 place settings of dinner plates, appetizer plates, cups, bowls. We host a lot and my DH hates using disposable anything. He is not fussy about anything else but he cannot abide paper plates, plastic spoons, plastic cups etc. He also cannot stand mismatched cups, mugs etc. So, we have 80 of the same stuff for dinnerware, glassware, silverware etc. We use them for our daily use too. Usually we host up to 40-50 people twice a year, so, I can pass on these extras to both my kids. They both like our stuff.

I also have one set of really special dinnerware and it has full 16 settings. And I have lovely cloth napkins to go with it. I only use it with close family for holidays. I know my kids may not want these because you need to hand wash them.

Please, no junk for the kitchen! Can't stand gifts that just turn into clutter. A drill or impact wrench are fantastic. A gift basket of gorilla tape and clue, nice box cutters and blades, and some caulking at useful. Home depot gift card. Costco membership. If you do get kitchen stuff, a good chef's knife is always good. Drill bits and torque wrench kits are super useful too.

A good tool kit and a good blender. My older brother gave me both when I got my first place (I’m a woman) and I still use them regularly almost 20 years later.

If he’s a good cook, give a gift certificate to a fancy cooking store. I love shopping at those places but can’t usually justify it.

A selection of Penzey’s spices.

What does he have already for his apartment? How much do you want to spend? Nice expresso machine? Pots and pans? Nice plates?

A drill might be handy if you know how to use it but, if you gave it to my husband he wouldn't know! He would appreciate other gifts that you turn your nose at. Costco membership is only good if you have a large family! It is a waste if you are single

Tools every home owner should have. Something similar was given to us when we bought our first house and honest to us and, honestly, it was the best gift ever.
