Pedestrians actually always have right of way, even in the bike lane. It’s rude to stand in it, and I’m always happy to roll my eyes at people who do that as I swerve my bike into the street to avoid them, but that’s the law.

It sounds like at least one poster wants a direct protected bike lane from your home to office? So can I get a direct bus route from my house to office? Metro stop outside my house and a stop directly in front of my office without switching lines? Sounds ridiculous, just like complaining about a detour of a few blocks to bike to work.

That’s the current reality for cars and there are several apps that support car drivers finding the best routes and the best parking spots. It’s also not too different for transit riders, who may need to make multiple transfers and unwanted stops along the way to pick up other riders. Living in a city means that we should expect to be somewhat inconvenienced as a normal course of business.

For example, one seat on a round trip flight from DC to Tokyo produces about the same GHG emissions as a family car in the US. That would also be more beneficial to the environment then bike lanes. Unfortunately that would destroy the entire economy and cause people to starve. There's no associated systemic downsides with planting trees in the bike lanes.
