The difference between the number of applications and total waitlisted is interesting. If a school had 60 applications, 5 matches, and 40 waitlisted, that means that 15 applicants didn't get waitlisted because they were matched somewhere else that they ranked higher? Is there any other reason they wouldn't be on the initial waitlist? Looking at Lafayette for third grade, for example, there were 83 applications, 0 matches, and 63 waitlisted. It seems surprising that there were 20 kids that listed Lafayette and were actually matched somewhere else... |
Yes, that's what it means, but why would that be surprising? Lots of folks throw in a list of random NW schools to fill out their lists... I assume that happens w/ Lafayette a lot. |
That's what it means. The only other thing that could happen is if their application were somehow kicked out of the system as an error, like if it were a fictional person or some other really weird circumstance. It's not that unusual to match somewhere else you ranked higher. You don't know where people ranked Lafayette-- they could have 11 schools that they ranked higher. People will fill the bottom of their list with all kinds of random long shots, it makes no sense but they do it. |
I'm just trying to think through what those lottery lists would look like. By mid-elementary, you're presumably trying to figure out a middle school pathway, so listing all of the long shot JR feeders. Or maybe you are having a terrible year and looking for an exit option from your current school? If the former, I'd assume you'd be waitlisted everywhere and/or not THAT many people would have a top application option that was actually making results day offers to those grades. If the latter, then I guess you'd put any mix of schools that would get you out of your current situation. It just seems like a high percent of applications to be in the latter category. |
Is there a spreadsheet that includes charters? |
There’s probably a spreadsheet available somewhere, but since there are less preferences for charters you can just use the table at the bottom of the original data link from this thread. Each school shows the match preferences by grade at the bottom. https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/aaron2446/viz/MSDCSeatsandWaitlistOfferData_draft/MSDCPublicDisplay |
At least for Marie Reed pk3, the spreadsheet info doesn’t align with the tableau data. The latter is more in line with past data but it’s still annoying that I have no way of being sure which is actually correct. |
Interesting that for 6th Deal opened zero slots and Hardy opened 25. That is more than they have ever opened up in lottery. Wonder what that's about. |
Ok now I'm confused because according to their spreadsheet, some of the waitlist we're on are shorter than our waitlist number. Why would that be? This is not true for the tableau data -- that makes sense with our numbers. So I'm guessing the spreadsheet is either wrong or I'm overlooking something obvious. |
What does it mean if our waitlist position # for a specific school keeps going up? It used to be 39, then 40, and now it's 41. |
Sibling preference. See https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1128426.page |
The person above linked to sibling preference. The longer form explanation is that some schools have sibling preference. The ones that do usually have two versions: sibling attending and sibling enrolled. The former is when there is a sibling already at the school (i.e. attending in SY 22-23). The sibling enrolled preference is triggered when a sibling enrolls. In this case, that could mean siblings who matched in lottery and enrolled, or it could be siblings in K+ who have by right enrollment privileges and the parents (smartly) enrolled the kid for next year to get the sibling preference triggers. At any rate, your WL spot is where it is relative to people without (or with the same preference), but similarly situated people can move to preference WL once that preference is triggered, moving them ahead of you and causing your WL # to get worse. |
Seems like the spreadsheet was probably incorrect and it's been pulled from the website. However the Lottery Results dashboard has been updated and it aligns with Seats/Waitlist Tableau tables. https://enrolldcps.dc.gov/node/61 |
MY kid's 5th grade BASIS number dropped by 40 spots today (started low 100s) |
Wow. |
