What does it mean if our waitlist position # for a specific school keeps going up? It used to be 39, then 40, and now it's 41.
The person above linked to sibling preference. The longer form explanation is that some schools have sibling preference. The ones that do usually have two versions: sibling attending and sibling enrolled. The former is when there is a sibling already at the school (i.e. attending in SY 22-23). The sibling enrolled preference is triggered when a sibling enrolls. In this case, that could mean siblings who matched in lottery and enrolled, or it could be siblings in K+ who have by right enrollment privileges and the parents (smartly) enrolled the kid for next year to get the sibling preference triggers. At any rate, your WL spot is where it is relative to people without (or with the same preference), but similarly situated people can move to preference WL once that preference is triggered, moving them ahead of you and causing your WL # to get worse.
