Often Hispanic girls, even if they earn a full ride to a prestigious university, are pressured to stay at home and attend a local college. It isn’t necessarily about affording tuition or not, it is cultural. My mother is from Latin America and she pressured me to stay home after finishing two years at a local CC. She would hear horror stories about things that would happen on college campuses from her sisters. Thanks to Pell grants, and my mom finally giving in, I was able to attend and in-state university that was four hours away.
