What does this mean?

Take my kid. High ACT, but low freshman year grades, so GPA was in the 25%. And she strongly specialized in humanities. She was likely top 5% in her class on the humanities side. But, no STEM APs and took standard Calc, not AP. UVA wants most rigorous classes across the 5, core areas. She never seriously considered UVA because she knew it was a huge long shot. Instead, she did ED at WM (and was admitted), B/c WM likes quirky kids and specialists. She self selected to WM and never applied to UVA— because she knew she wouldn’t get in.

Many kids in the top 20% of the class do this— don’t even bother with UVA because their transcript isn’t perfect. They don’t show up in the rejection numbers.

I’m surprised she got into W&M. A few years ago she probably wouldn’t have. It’s gotten easier.

Can you show us some data to prove that W&M, or any other reputable college, has become LESS selective in recent years?
Because I seriously doubt it.

They can’t, and you have to ignore half the people’s statements on this board. There’s really no basis in fact a lot of times.

There’s always some dumb argument on this board that W&M is not as selective as University of Virginia therefore, it is somehow not as good. It is a wonderful school. Some kids would thrive at either. Some kids would prefer one over the other. They are different but both good. Somehow people can’t understand that.

27% in state admit rate. Do they just welcome kids from SWVA who manage to fill out the application because the NOVA and Richmond rates are not even close to that high.

PP here - here you go: https://research.schev.edu/enrollment/b8_admissions_locality.asp

Arlington and Fairfax are 32%, Loudoun is 26%

PP is seething at the one kid from Bland County who applied and got in.

She’s probably a right winger. They tend to think like that — worried that someone else is getting a benefit. Good liberals only look in someone else’s bowl to be sure they have enough.

Some folks just have miserable lives and can only feel good if they come here and make anon snarky comments. Here is actual readily available W&M data.

Am I an idiot, or does UVA's 12 percent out-of-state EA acceptance rate seem just really low? Thought the Pingry kids could always count on getting in?

Out of state has almost been much harder than instate. Way more applications from out of state.

Please stop. Take it to politics. Comments like yours don’t belong here (especially if political and especially if stupid!)

You can if you go to SCHEV and see the quality of student per GPA and test score of enrolled students last year across the 75th percentile, mean and 25th percentile. It all but two categories the enrolled UVA students are higher. But since you sound snarky I’m not going to do that work for you.

No skin in this game as my kid got into both but chose to attend OOS. So, I actually did what you said and cannot see an earth-shattering difference. Yes they are a bit higher, but it is not like a sea of a difference.
Is this so you can retain your feeling of superiority?

UVA:
SAT (75/Median/25) - 1520-/1470/1400
ACT (75/Median/25) - 34/33/32
GPA (75/Median/25) - 4.53/4.40/4.24

W&M
SAT (75/Median/25) - 1520/1460/1375
ACT (75/Median/25) - 34/33/32
GPA (75/Median/25) - 4.51/4.33/4.15

Thank you so much for PP for posting the actual stats of UVA and W&M.
That is very helpful.

DC was accepted ED to W&M with a 1430/4.2.
Withdrew UVA application with some FOMO but the ED relief has been priceless.
I recently was looking at the acceptance rates and always just thought that UVA was just more selective.
There are other things that come into play- UVA is a larger school, has more applications, has a higher yield (could this also be due to cost because there is a big difference in price). So with W&M's yield being lower, wouldn't they have to have a higher acceptance rate? Higher acceptance rates make W&M look less selective- until stats like above are posted that show not much of a difference.

I will never understand the need to say one of those great schools is better than the other. They're different and they are both wonderful. Good luck to everyone tonight.

UVA’s stats ARE higher in five out of the nine categories. A year ago it was seven out of 9 but that’s only because the reported numbers keep going up. As the number of quality applicants increase each year, and test optional continues (allows lower scoring students who would not submit get accepted and enrolled) the stats at all schools will continue to climb as you see here.

Who cares? Why do both sides waste time with these petty arguments? It's only parents that worry about this stuff.

What I hear is: We cannot be equal! One has to be better and I will nitpick and blow up any differences in my favor to show you into your lowly place. I rank supreme!

Seems many Virginians are unable to take pride in the good universities we are lucky to have in this state. All of them.
