How—with the above, the Arundel football player incident, the MAGA presence, the Mike Peroutka support, and this incident—can some of you still deny that this school and area has a very significant problem with racism? How can you claim to be liberal DCUM and then move to this area for “the schools”?

Thank you, I remember hearing about these incidents too. I will be a SP parent (kid is not in middle or high school yet). What can I do? Write an angry email describing my disgust? Look into privates? Our friends and families are diverse so I don’t worry that my kid will turn MAGA but this is deeply unsettling.

Work to keep Dana S as the BoE rep instead of a moms for Liberty crazy. Work to kick out Fiedler next election.
As the redistricting process starts, don’t try to protect your housing prices as the expense of diversity and equity.

PP here originally from Bethesda. Even though Shipley’s parents won’t let SP be redistricted from SPHS, I have seen many Severna Park proper parents support redistricting and say that it’s necessary to solve crowding at SP schools, which is something I’d never see Bethesda parents say in a million years.

Eh. Don’t be too impressed. They’re fine with redistrciting WITHIN the sphs cluster. Because it really doesn’t make a difference if your kid goes to Folger McKinsey or Benfield. But even the mention of redistrciting has the Shipleys parents in a tizzy telling everyone how there’s simply no way they can go to Old Mill with **those** people.

SP Parent. Thanks for the positive and proactive actions I can take, I will look into and also try to help Dana S. get re-elected! Ugh, I have heard this anti-redistricting from SP/Shipley's. Why are the Shipley's parents so fanatical about no redistricting? The community seems very nice and would retain its home values or are they all secret MAGA folk?

SPHS is an 8/10 on grear schools and OMHS is a 5/10.
Let’s give the benefit of the doubt and say that the fact that sphs is 84% white has nothing to do with it (it does, of course…) but most families would rather be in a more highly ranked school cluster. People moved there “for the schools” so despite the fact that Shipleys is actually in Millersville and not SP, they feel like they “deserve” to be on sphs because that’s precisely why so many of them moved there to begin with.

That’s Shipley’s problem and their own shortcoming! Everyone knows that redistricting of schools is ALWAYS possible. If being in the SPHS district is that important to them, why would they choose to live in a neighborhood that is NOT even in Severna Park and down the street from Old Mill? If being in SP is that important to them, they should have bought a house in SP proper in an area that is less likely to get redistricted out of SP schools. Shipley’s moved their way into SP schools in the first place at the expense of a community that’s actually in Severna Park.

Also, GreatSchools ratings for AACPS high schools aren’t accurate because a GS error put in faulty AP data for ALL AACPS high schools (saying that <1% of students take AP classes), and that caused some schools to drop nearly two spots lower than it actually should. OMHS is supposed to be a 6/10. Arundel/South River/Broadneck were an 8/10, and SPHS is supposed to be a 9/10.

Old Mill doesn’t even seem to be a bad school. There is the IB program available.

Old Mill is not a bad school at all, even looking from the perspective of rankings. It doesn't rank as high as Severna Park, Broadneck, Arundel, or South River, but it is pretty comparable to Southern and Chesapeake in rank and sits in the middle of the pack.

The new "Old Mill West" High School could even be both a high performing and diverse high school if AACPS is smart about how they district the school and doesn't avoid creating another poverty pocket there because Shipleys families don't want to go there. If "Old Mill West" serves Shipley's, Crownsville, Millersville, Severn, and parts of Glen Burnie, the school would likely be on the higher performing side and that could be a game changer for the northern region of Anne Arundel County, which families have traditionally avoided for the schools.

What??
Her first reaction is we must never condemn students? She leads with that. She leads with protecting the bully.
Then she spends an entire paragraph threatening to find the students who exposed the video and tells parents to condemn this behavior (the bullying or the outing?). This is disturbingly unclear.

She claims people notifying her of the video is evidence that the community doesn’t stand for this?
No, no one at that table stood up for that kid.
Except maybe the kid who taped it and airdropped it who she’s essentially threatening in this letter.

Why didn’t she say: we have a serious problem here. This student was shockingly abused and it was done openly and in front of peers who did not attempt to stop it. It appears this behavior has become normalized in our school. We need to fix this now.

Instead she said: nothing to see here, we have no major, problems and if any students embarrass us again you will be found and punished.

I seriously wonder if the bully’s attorney contacted her to demand she prioritize protecting him.

This letter is atrocious. Affluenza run amok.

+1000!!!

The reason why parents were so angry and rushed the administration's office is because this is a KNOWN problem and parents are frustrated with the principal's LACK OF ACTION.

You don't get angry at the administration first if you believe this is an isolated incident by one random rogue jerk. The defense of the bully is clear in the letter from the school and reflects the inaction AACPS is known for with bullying.

Any update on what’s being done? Seems odd to go back to school and pretend like nothing happened.

Bedell is having a listening and learning session focusing on D&I on Monday at SPHS. It's a good start, but I don't love that the announcement once again talked about the airdrop and not the actual problem to begin with.

Focusing on the airdrop feels like you’re blaming the whistleblower to me.

Did anyone go to the event at SPHS? I've heard good things about it, but not any first hand reports.

Here we are a year later. A girl on my team at Severna Park was just kicked off the team because her dad made complaint about a racist comment the coaches daughter made. The coach sent her an email it was because she wore pajama pants and was on her phone during practice. She wasn't even practicing because she was already sidelined for the same.

Where are all the DCUMers who rave about this school and area and talk about how people in Severna Park are better than the trashy “racist” people in Pasadena, Crofton, Edgewater, etc?

Nice job responding to an incident of bigotry by spewing your own bigotry.

So it seems like the environment of being able to call out bullying still doesn’t exist, and sports still reigns high.

Let's just say that what they are doing to that poor girl is absolutely wrong. They have turned many of team against her and make threats to kick off the team...shes not wrong

I heard from a mother on the team that the girls are afraid to say anything. They don’t want to be kicked off the team. She doesn’t think her daughter gonna try out again.

What team is this? Lacrosse?
Anonymous
It’s definitely the varsity cheer team. My girl is on jv and they heard some troubling things about what’s happened. In fact, the girl was on Jv for a like a week last season then was moved up…

White people out AAC must be some type of bold! That kid would have never got away with that in PG,MOCO, and definitely not DC
