Just remembered that Sean Urbanski, the white UMD student who killed a Black Bowie State student on UMD’s campus & was part of a very racist FB group is an SPHS grad & from SP. There was also an incident in 2016 where a student threatened to bring his dad’s gun to school and kill all the gay students. How—with the above, the Arundel football player incident, the MAGA presence, the Mike Peroutka support, and this incident—can some of you still deny that this school and area has a very significant problem with racism? How can you claim to be liberal DCUM and then move to this area for “the schools”?
Thank you, I remember hearing about these incidents too. I will be a SP parent (kid is not in middle or high school yet). What can I do? Write an angry email describing my disgust? Look into privates? Our friends and families are diverse so I don’t worry that my kid will turn MAGA but this is deeply unsettling.
Join WISE (https://m.facebook.com/WomenIndivisibleStrongEffective/?_se_imp=1Gotsgvcd95U1HTkK) Work to keep Dana S as the BoE rep instead of a moms for Liberty crazy. Work to kick out Fiedler next election. As the redistricting process starts, don’t try to protect your housing prices as the expense of diversity and equity.
PP here originally from Bethesda. Even though Shipley’s parents won’t let SP be redistricted from SPHS, I have seen many Severna Park proper parents support redistricting and say that it’s necessary to solve crowding at SP schools, which is something I’d never see Bethesda parents say in a million years.
Eh. Don’t be too impressed. They’re fine with redistrciting WITHIN the sphs cluster. Because it really doesn’t make a difference if your kid goes to Folger McKinsey or Benfield. But even the mention of redistrciting has the Shipleys parents in a tizzy telling everyone how there’s simply no way they can go to Old Mill with **those** people.
SP Parent. Thanks for the positive and proactive actions I can take, I will look into and also try to help Dana S. get re-elected! Ugh, I have heard this anti-redistricting from SP/Shipley's. Why are the Shipley's parents so fanatical about no redistricting? The community seems very nice and would retain its home values or are they all secret MAGA folk?
SPHS is an 8/10 on grear schools and OMHS is a 5/10. Let’s give the benefit of the doubt and say that the fact that sphs is 84% white has nothing to do with it (it does, of course…) but most families would rather be in a more highly ranked school cluster. People moved there “for the schools” so despite the fact that Shipleys is actually in Millersville and not SP, they feel like they “deserve” to be on sphs because that’s precisely why so many of them moved there to begin with.
That’s Shipley’s problem and their own shortcoming! Everyone knows that redistricting of schools is ALWAYS possible. If being in the SPHS district is that important to them, why would they choose to live in a neighborhood that is NOT even in Severna Park and down the street from Old Mill? If being in SP is that important to them, they should have bought a house in SP proper in an area that is less likely to get redistricted out of SP schools. Shipley’s moved their way into SP schools in the first place at the expense of a community that’s actually in Severna Park. Also, GreatSchools ratings for AACPS high schools aren’t accurate because a GS error put in faulty AP data for ALL AACPS high schools (saying that <1% of students take AP classes), and that caused some schools to drop nearly two spots lower than it actually should. OMHS is supposed to be a 6/10. Arundel/South River/Broadneck were an 8/10, and SPHS is supposed to be a 9/10.
Old Mill doesn’t even seem to be a bad school. There is the IB program available.
