ADHD diagnosis + high WISC is still not a guarantee of AAP admissions on appeal. They look holistically at the packet. If the GBRS + commentary, work samples, and achievement level of the child do not indicate that the child would do well in AAP with proper SN supports, then the child won't be admitted. It's not a golden ticket. |
I’ve posted this before but the schools really need to have a third rail for above average / bright students. It’s not fair for those kids to be stuck in class with kids who need additional assistance or disruptive kids. This is why so many parents prep to get their kids into AAP even if they aren’t AAP material and I don’t blame them. Meanwhile, the kids who are exceptionally bright are bored and find the AAP work very easy.
Brace yourself for high school where there is very little differentiation. There is no gatekeeping for honors classes, unfortunately. |
I agree with you but then there is the aspect that the third rail would keep the second rail down, etc. Some time ago someone posted a “science keeps aap” thread which exploded and devolved but there is the argument that doing this is really just Prohibits kids from ever actually getting better at school. And it’s one big vicious circle after that. My personal view is that all of this is moot. Fairfax county is getting so prohibitively expensive that this kind of backdoor mythos will end soon enough. I think what we will see more of is the AAP is being selected for kids that are well behaved and engaged but maybe not these bright superstars that have an IEP or something. And we are seeing that with the complaints on this board of how GBRS drives AAP pool decisions now. Currently we are in a school where the principal has decided not to pupil place kids into AAP this year and I have had two parents ask me how my kid got into the AAP class. I really don’t know other than her quant score was 135 and she was nice to the teacher. But I know the teacher is happy with the class and my kid is learning a lot this year and things feel almost pre-Covid normal. So I really hope AAP stays. I suspect it won’t though. |
My neighbor got a diagnosis for their kid so they could get extra time on their SATs. I just don't find this all that credible. |
The backdoor into AAP has been a well-kept secret despite being fairly common. |
Your unhinged delusional perspective is noted, now will you finally go away? |
Just because you don't like to admit the truth doesn't make it any less true. This is a matter of fact. Everyone knows it's going on. It's just that some would prefer to keep it secret. Maybe because they're embarrassed that their kids couldn't get in the front door or maybe because they want to keep this available to anyone with means. I don't know or care really but I feel it's only fair to point this out. |
Whether your "super-secret-but-everyone-is-doing-it" backdoor is real or not, you convinced the school administration that it is and they are no longer doing it. You can buy as many WISCs as you want but you still won't get your kid in that way anymore. |
DP here. One of my friends actually went through “the process” and didn’t get her kid in. I think principals are being extra stringent on this now because they are getting feedback that the classes aren’t moving as fast as they should be. Hence the lack of pupil placement this year in our school. |
It's not a question if it's real or not, half the kids get in this way. Not sure why pretending is helping anyone. |
By your logic, half the kids are admitted on appeal. That is unequivocally untrue. Your claims are absurd and your jealously is sad. Please get help. |
There's really no shame in this. It's very common. |
It obviously didn't work for you. |
My older child got in the old fashioned way but younger kid had to use the backdoor. It only took 2 appeals. |
How common is it to add Level IV students in later grades? We are happy with our private school that ends in 5th, but would push for AAP earlier if it's tough to get in after elementary. We had separate testing done for privates and kid qualified for DYS so I would hope acceptance wouldn't be an issue. |
