FCPS Data shows that Tutor.com is a failture

The demographic is perhaps different but I do not understand a parent complaining about a service such as this being offered. The goal is to reach students that do not have the financial ability to seek out private tutoring and the services are made available 24/7. This is a free opportunity..if it does not meet your needs then you may choose to not utilize the services. If your student needs more or different services then this is not for you. The attitudes of Fairfax County never cease to amaze me.

What grade do you teach? If my kid was in middle or high school and had assigned homework, I might have felt differently. But I don't know how Tutor.com could help my ES child who is struggling to catch up in writing and basic math principles.

I get where Tutor.cim might be beneficial for middle and high school students but it's not helpful for elementary kids. My kids don't get homework. One needs basic help with reading specifically phonics. I've tried to help and I don't know how to help, we are working on getting her tested. Also math facts.

My 4th grader needs help with math concepts, lots of holes but we don't have specific problems to work on.

+1. My God.

FCPS introduces a measure to address learning loss - an unprecedented event - it doesn't go well for the first quarter and then people are screaming failure. Give it a chance. One issue we have run into is a tutor not being available at a desired time. I don't know if that's a widespread problem though.

Yes. We had a longer-term writing project online, creating a little book, and we tried to get my daughter help with that. The tutor didn't have access to the online program and so she tried to help take my daughter thru new things to write, but my 3rd grader felt very uncomfortable trying to talk to this faceless voice. So it wasn't great.

My high school students are beginning to use it more. Unfortunately in their fabulous teenager-y way they are using it like photomath. The tutor does the problem for them and they are just copying it down.

I'm going to suggest that we make one of the advisory lessons next week on appropriate strategies for using this resource, because I think it could be helpful.

They made a mess of it by keeping kids out of school for so long so no, we are not in the mood to be “understanding”

I don't understand how it works. Can anyone explain?

I think they should have had a video to explain it.

My kids have been taught how to use it several times. Ask your DC if they know how to access and use it.

The FCPS email from today states that Tutor.com will review papers and give quizzes. Is this true?

I have family friend used to work at Tutor.com and had a very interesting take on it. She said that most parents have no clue that in some parts of the country failing schools are basically the cheap Tutor.com contracts to tread water. It’s not working for these schools.

She said that kids would come in with hours worth of assignments. They had no idea how to begin to solve them. She knew that they didn’t even look try the homework before going onto Tutor.com to get the answers. She was limited to a 30 min session and really could not help these kids. She quit because it finally dawned on her that the schools were actually trying to outsource teaching. It was a waste of time for everyone.

Good thing that’s not the case here. This is extra (free) help, not a replacement for quality school.
