Do you shred your own cheese instead of buying it shredded?

We have this grater and it’s fantastic: Microplane Gourmet Series Ultra Coarse Extra Wide Stainless Steel Cheese Grater https://a.co/d/7DYyOUY

Never dulls, easy to use, and way easier to clean than a box grater. I usually put it in the dishwasher (where it only takes up as much space as a dinner plate) but I can also clean it quick with a little soap and a scrub brush if I might need to use it again soon. We’ve had ours for over 10 years and only just discovered it needs to be replaced (handle starting to separate a bit).

It can take me 5-10 minute to grate cheese for a big batch of Mac and cheese but usually it takes no more than 2.

Im not above buying shredded but avoid it because it’s expensive and I hate the extra packaging, plus the issue with chemicals on the cheese. Like a lot of kitchen tasks, if you get used to grating your cheese you barely notice it as an issue.

It tastes better. But I don’t preshred it, I only shred what I’m using that day (or maybe into the next day) because if you shred all of a block and have it sit it tends to mold.

Old fashioned box grater works for us, but I have a 5 year old who is happy to do most of it. I know others use a food processor, but I can’t imagine cleaning a food processor bin and blade just for some cheese. Then again you have people who don’t seem to mind cleaning that all in one sandwich maker… I prefer just using a single nonstick pan that I can wipe out with a piece of paper towel.

I have both. When I have time I grate, but last night we got in late and were all hungry so I grabbed the shredded for some quesadillas and had dinner on the table in 5 minutes. Sometimes I just aim for "good enough."

a tip for those who shred their own, spray the grater with with Pam before so the cheese doesn't stick or clump up.

I always buy blocks. I would say we grate some amount of cheese almost every day for whatever is being made. It’s a step I’m never been bothered by, just as I never buy precut vegetables I always chop my own.

Thanks for this. I use a box grater and it’s a hassle. This looks much easier.

Among the best things I’ve ever bought on Amazon: Cheese Grater Rotary, Rotary Grater for Kitchen, Kitchen Grater Vegetable Slicer with 3 Drum Blades, Fast Cutting Cheese Shredder for Vegetables and Nuts https://a.co/d/6koT2ux

Lickety split, cheese is grated. I can do all my Mac and cheese grating in under 5 minutes. Same with lasagna. It also does wonders grating up zucchini when I make zucchini bread.

Same. I grate my own if it’s a recipe I care about, but I keep a bag of pre-shredded on hand for my DH and kids to put on chili, etc.

It takes 2 seconds to grace your own. We have a cheap boxer grater from target with 4 size holes. We use it multiple times a day.

Listen I agree it tastes better to shred your own but this is a load of bull. I have three kids and when I need to make a whole crap load of quesadillas it would take me 10 minutes to shred all that cheese. I mean probably not actually but still, it adds a significant step. And then you have to clean a cheese grater which is one of the most irritating things to clean, right up there with a garlic press.

So sure lets agree with the pretentiousness that it is in fact tastier, I'll give you that, but you must be one of those people who writes '20 minute recipes' online that actually take 45.

I've only and always bought pre-shredded. Don't even own a box grater. How hard is it to clean the box grater without cutting yourself? Also, What if you grate too much? Do you just leave it in the refrigerator in a ziplock for the next time?

What? Just stick it in the dishwasher or use a dish brush. It's super easy to clean. Yes, the leftovers go in the fridge and you can use them on something else.

I don't have a dishwasher OR a dish brush. I just use a sponge to clean my dishes.

NP. Why don’t you have a dish brush? Not trying to be critical, but cannot imagine not having one.

I e never had one. Always just used a sponge.

Listen I don't care if you don't grate your cheese but you should get a dish brush PP. It will likely speed up your cleaning.

I use a salad shooter to shred. It’s quick and easy to clean.

NP. I'm not as irritated about it as you are but with three toddlers I just buy pre grated cheese now. When the kids get older, I might go back to grating my own. It does taste better to me.
