Because no teaching happens once the SOLs are held and yet we have weeks of school after....those count towards the 180 days but no real instruction happens. Is that what you want for your kids education? Imbecile.

So why don't you focus on what happens after the sols, or when they are administered? Having one day off for a holiday observed by a billion people around the world doesn't seem like it would be as important as that.

A billion people around the world, sure. But how many here to justify another missed day? And if that's the measure, why don't we have off for Chinese New Year?

There is now an O day for the Lunar New year, it might be a full day off but the Lunar New Year is recognized. I believe the date of the New Year festivities is slightly different among the culture that celebrate it so I have no idea which one they picked for the Lunar New Year.

And yes, a billion people celebrate Diwali around the globe but how many in the US? I am guessing that Christmas is not a Federal Holiday in many countries across the globe because it is not a commonly celebrated day off like it is in the US and Europe.

Oh ok! We don’t do those holidays in LA, but we have Juneteenth and all the Jewish holidays.

Juneteenth is a Federal Holiday now so most schools places have it off if they are still in session.

diwali isn't a federal holiday why is fcps using it

Let me translate for OP:

All school systems have days off that aren’t federal holidays. Were people complaining about the kids getting days off for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur?

Personally, love these shortened weeks and random days off. DD is up at 5:30 for school, and we know that biologically, it’s not appropriate for teens to be up that early. These break days give her an opportunity to sleep in and take her time do all the things she otherwise doesn’t have time for.

Wonder why VA has the lowest standards for math and reading in the nation (50th)?

That’s an even bigger issue!

Liberals fought hard to remove any entanglement between public school and Christian religion, now these hypocrites can't add enough religious holidays to the schedule.

Wish my kids were in school and learning. Wish the School Board even cared about that.

+1. I don't know a single family in my neighborhood that is happy about the calendar. In fact, I know zero parents who appreciate this - my fellow liberals included.
We rightfully expect our kids to be in school. Employers don't give us 9 4 day work weeks in the fall so it is unreasonable to expect that families with young kids can sustain this.

I cannot wait to oust this school board. They have zero interest in bettering the education of our children and spend 100% of their time in performance liberalism.

Weird how more breaks spread out through a roughly trimester system is the norm in all the counties that OP would laud as "teaching academics" and say we should mimick, yet when we do mimic them it's wrong ?

Last I checked we center 2 weeks of break around Xmas still

Did you look at this board? Yes, people were complaining about it. It is unnecessary. Set them as O days so that people can miss the day without worrying about assignments and tests if they do miss the day.

Most of my Jewish friends worked on those days. My Hindu friends who celebrate Diwali are all working today. There is no good reason for those days to be days off school. As someone who was raised Catholic, we went to school on holy days, to include Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, masses were set for 5 PM or later because of peoples work schedules and family schedules. Lots of Churches had services during lunch time for people who could go then.

These are not days with high levels of absenteeism.

Yeah, if only it were that simple. I’d love to be going to barre class instead of paying private tutors to get my kids somewhat caught up after the scamdemic school closures, woke ideology run amock and now more holidays and days off. I think everyone and their beliefs should be celebrated but weve truly lost sight of the bigger picture here.

ummm, yeah. No.

And Northern Virginia is a different beast then the rest of Virginia in a lot of ways, to include educational standards and school quality.

Yes, so we need more Holidays to be equal to the rest of Virginia?

Perhaps because we pay our teachers 48th out of 50 in the nation and thus that is the talent that we recruit.

Why of course. One day off for Diwali is clearly why your child can't read.
