| We have a longer year, though. As a teacher, I would prefer less days off during the year and a longer summer. These days off here and there help to catch up on sleep, but I can’t clear my head. I am always thinking about teaching. |
In years past, teachers and students took the religious holidays off anyway. And it was a scramble to find subs and nothing of substance got taught. And if one math teacher was our but the other wasnt then it wasn't fair to the kids who didn't have teacher instruction that day. It is really really hard to get subs right now in the post pandemic great resignation. Want more days in school? Lobby for better sub pay. |
Well, if something's bad for a few kids then it should be bad for 170,000 kids. The FCPS rally cry. |
Yeah, pretty much. |
Which is why there should be a no-HW/quiz/test/paper/assignment policy for those days so that kids don't have to worry about it. But the kids can still be in class for lecture or get the lecture notes if their family misses class that day. |
You'd prefer that for your personal schedule, but in terms of learning it's widely accepted that shorter but more frequent breaks are better for learning and prevent learning loss. A long summer is awful for learning loss. Having a day off here or there is actually very productive for many. It's why even workplaces are starting to look at 4 day work weeks. I get it - for parents with younger kids who are both working (this was my situation), the random days off are really hard. But now that I have one in 5th and one in middle school on that early schedule, I really appreciate them having days off to recharge. We've found that sports and music lessons still happen on these days off but it's much more relaxing to not have to rush to and from school for one day. And missing one day of school does not result in the kids forgetting the previous lesson and teachers having to reteach. I was not a fan when this schedule came out, but experiencing it, I kind of like it. |
+1. Don't they want to respect the teachers that observe these religious holidays? |
| What religious holiday is this? We are in California but already had 2 Jewish holidays plus a few other random no reason days off. |
Indian |
The amount of school days is the same. These holidays didn't replace instructional days, they delayed them. Kids are not missing any academics. They now go 4 days later than they did last year. Get over yourself. |
Wow that's really culturally aware of you. India is a country with lots of religions. It's Diwali. |
Then wouldn’t it make more sense to have tomorrow off? |
Oh ok! We don’t do those holidays in LA, but we have Juneteenth and all the Jewish holidays. |
A billion people around the world, sure. But how many here to justify another missed day? And if that's the measure, why don't we have off for Chinese New Year? |
Juneteenth is a Federal Holiday now so most schools places have it off if they are still in session. |
