Ah. First timer. Unfortunately it does not work that way. Just because you see similar stats on Naviance getting accepted to the reach school you are searching, does not mean you have a good chance. I suggest you also see how many similar and even higher stats got rejected. Furthermore, I think Naviance is misleading since it is self reported data. In your kid's circumstances, I think they should go with Duke. |
+100 Unless they are a recruited athlete, sport participation of any kind and level will not move the needle as an EC |

I disagree with some of the PP, I think given what you've said about your son (1580, salutatorian, good leadership, some unique national awards, well-rounded and should have good essays) he has a very good shot at Duke ED. If you want to see the profiles of some people who got into Duke this past admissions cycle, check out https://www.reddit.com/r/collegeresults/.

Wow that is quite specific, that will definitely help in showing interest and writing the "Why Duke" essay |
Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing this. From what we've seen from Duke, their lifeblood is their undergraduate program so I believe most of the focus goes there which is nice. I'll remember to keep checking up on DS mental health wherever he ends up attending, struggles can come to anyone. |
We do have good backup plans like UMD. I don't believe UVA is really a backup plan but based on past admissions from DS's high school, it would be very shocking if he did not get into UVA. He would be very happy with UVA too. |
Thank you! Just trying to learn as much as possible from you folks! |
Thank you. It is true that many kids with similar stats to DS also have been rejected, but I think the main thing is that he shouldn't be completely out of contention off the bat. |
The most important factor here is does your high school send kids to Duke every year and if so, how many? Duke, way more than Ivy League schools, likes certain high schools more than others. If it's a large, wealthy, suburban public high school that sends kids to Duke regulary, I think your DS has a very good shot. Good luck! |
Wow thank you so much for compiling this. After looking at some of the profiles through the links, it simultaneously confounds and comforts me. I think the top schools are in reach for DS, but seeing so many rejections as well shows how random the process is. It's also quite impressive how many kids have chosen Duke over other top schools like Princeton and Yale. |
It's hard to really judge by this without seeing the essays and recommendations though. Of course on paper all of them are strong and seem to hit some minimum standard. |
Parchment has 21% Duke vs. 79% Princeton for cross-admits, and 23% Duke vs. 77% Yale. |
Our school does not have a history of sending kids to Duke, essentially everyone who has applied has been rejected. However, I don't believe any of them have really been early decision from what DS has said. |
Parchment is not reliable. It also has 33% Bowdoin vs 67% Princeton and 25% Bowdoin vs 75% Harvard. I promise 1 in 3 kids aren't picking Bowdoin over Princeton and 1 in 4 kids aren't picking Bowdoin over Harvard. |
I'm not sure what Parchment is. |
