It depends on school district. I looked this up once -- in Fairfax County VA placement in a grade is the decision of the school district officials or local school officials. Generally they will go with a continuation of whatever grade the child was in before -- say you sent your child to private school K and 1 for 2 years. Even if your child was the correct age to enter grade 3, upon entering the public school system, the school principal could make his or her own grade placement decisions -- placing the child in grade three -- or could follow what had been done before and place your child in grade 2. The district will attempt to work with your family and your preferences but retains the right to place the child as it sees fit. |
Thanks for your research. Based on your response, it appears that a parent could enter a 5, 6, 7 or 8 year old child in a Kindergarten class. Come on people--shouldn't we draw a line SOMEWHERE?

AGAIN...You ppl are fixated on the exceptions not the rule. Look at any public K class in the metropolitan area. You will be hard-pressed to find a 7 or 8 year old....with even 6 being rare and those are primarily kids that just missed the cutoff and turned 5 on October 1. My friend's daughter is one of 8 kids that were 4 on the first day of K at a well-known N.Arlington preschool (tons of non-redshirted boys and girls). They did not have a single 7 or 8 year old. It seems this a problem with the area private schools and it is the school NOT the parents that are suggesting (even requiring for entry) the 'pre-flunking'. |
of course I meant "N.Arlington elemenatary school". |
