When will the masking end?

This. I’m not interested in my kid masking but other people may make different choices. What is the big deal? It’s a personal choice.

I want a culture of people who follow the science and recognize that indefinite masking has real harms. I want it to be normal for my kids to see faces of their teacher and peers. I always scoffed at moving to Virginia but I think I need to call a RE agent.

Why do you assume that those wearing masks, optional for them and optional for you but a different choice, aren’t following the science for their household? We have a family member with a chronic disease and know what it’s like to live with that and frankly don’t want another added on top. We do not want our kids to mask forever, but the omicron booster just came out (done!) and we are going to hopefully let up as that settles in and cases stay low. Our medical providers have said that’s rational. They don’t say that’s “liberal” as chronic diseases and long Covid don’t give a damn on your political views. I refuse to believe a little kindness to others is that hard when it’s about something optional for you. And yet, these threads go on and on and on.

I completely understand and respect that choice. But it's not like people outside of DC don't have chronic diseases.

And yet, your second sentance is all backhanded judgement. I'm grateful for some masking here, as the peer/societal pressure on us as it is for everyone is exhausting and in talking to friends in other states they feel similarly. Why do you care what others do? You don't have to mask. Give space and grace to those who want to make another optional choice. That's respect.

Libs love the masks. Part of their conformity. Right???

None of this matters. It’s personal choice now. People make different choices than you everyday about everything from food to clothes to work. This is just another example of that.

It is not personal choice for thousands of kids in DC who, for the remainder of this school year, will be forced to mask on and off, indoors and outdoors, for 10-day stretches when someone in their class tests positive over the weekend, or if they come to school and cough the wrong way. Meanwhile, there is not a single damn study that shows any efficacy whatsoever for masks in children in school under Omicron.

Which school is doing that?

I don’t think it’s a troll, but I do think it’s an exaggeration. Our school was heavily masked last spring - teachers were strongly encouraging it. Maybe they’ve loosened up this year. We left (for other reasons).

Masking is over in DC except in 3 charter schools. Last night I went to the most uber left retail store I know of and the mask requirement is gone and maybe just 1 person in a mask in the whole store.

I think OP is referring to the voluntary masking at this stage. At my mask-optional charter (at least while DC is in low), all teachers and staff are still in masks and I’d say half of kids. As many have pointed out upthread, at this point this seems like a very specific DC thing. I think the question is what is driving this social norm, and why is it so different from other blue cities and areas.

This is so interesting. I teach in MCPS and at my school, it looks like Covid is gone forever.
Practically no one is masking. I have to say no masks makes a difference. Kids seem happier and it is much easier to get to know my students when you can actually see their whole face. Looking back, I feel like masks created a distance between students and students and students and teachers.

In Saudi, all the women and girls are in full burka. Once they leave the Middle East, all bets all hijabs come off. In India and Dubai, some are veiled, but not all. Somehow DC has fashioned itself the most orthodox. Masking might as well be a matter of religion by now. I’m completely lost. DC dem but an atheist. Havent masked voluntarily for months but follow the rules. Doesn't common sense — and science— count for anything these days? Seems we’re mostly sheep.

Oh I see. Well, it’s a trend or custom like any other, right? You look around and see people in masks and think you should as well. People in this area are more likely to be willing to invest energy into a long-term outcome they think they want. Those schools probably just have a harder core of people who still believe in masking. And of course we are a uniquely political city where the mask is a potent symbol. Even so, I’ll bet $50 that masks will be totally off in the mask optional schools soon.

This is a lie. DCPS has gotten rid of this mandate this school year. So tell me what school has “thousands of children” that will be required to mask for 10 days after a classmate is positive. YOU ARE LYING

np. Chill. And look at the other active thread on this topic.

Yes, DCPS has gotten rid of the mandate, but not all charters have.

At least 4 charters — DCB, MV, inspired, CMI — have current mandates. Others, such as Lamb, will require masks at higher data levels.
