Why are cruises trashy?

Not something I desire to replicate.

Just curious as a Virginian, where do the old money Richmonders live?

Right near CCV (Country Club of Virginia) and St. Catherine’s/St. Christopher’s. Attendance at all 3 is apparently mandatory.

Thanks. I'll have to check that out.

All vacation destinations are focused on alcohol.

97% of the posters trashing cruises have never been on one.

This is DCUM…selective outrage. Cruising destroys the environment, but going on multiple international flights annually is OK for the earth’s wellbeing. These are the same “environmentalists” that live in 5,000+ square foot homes.

No, no selective outrage. The question is why cruising is considered trashy. Flights of course are also a big problem for the environment, that's why I dont' fly anymore. Have no relatives outside the US, so it's possible for me. But cruising is much worse for the einvironment than flights. Sorry to disturb your life in a fairy tale.

Those articles make endless assumptions in order to try to come to a comparison, but the assumptions may or may not be valid. Also, there are usually tradeoffs with which option is supposedly "worse," like is it worse to have emissions on the ocean, or way up high where the effects of greenhouse emissions are much more pronounced.

Basically, anything you do is bad for the environment. You can't be flying to your destination and saying that cruising is somehow worse.

Both are horrible. It matters little that one is “worse.” It’s also terrible to eat beef or drive a gasoline powered car. Or live in a larger home. Yet people do some of these but others and claim superiority.

I am regular middle class Black people and I was raised to believe that they were sort of low-rent too. I have never been on one just because I have no interest but I have friends who go often and love them.

Hmmm, neat that you can post on DCUM with a quill pen and papyrus.

But maybe all those whiffenpoofs are secretly trashy. They probably love a fried Twinkie washed down with a miller hi life too.

Anyway, my view is—-go on the vacations that work for you and your family, not the vacations that you think your parents think you should want.

Way to work in the fact that you attended Yale, which is apropos of nothing.

Now I just think Yale is a little trashy for slinging cruises

The tenants of a solid upbringing…work hard, do well in school, treat others nicely and cruises are “low rent.”

The workers are not slaves. It is a volunteer position where they make more money than other options in their country. Do they make 200k? No. Sorry.

Cruise ships companies make huge profits on the backs of its exploited employees (and on the backs of the environment). If you life in a country like Philippines you are not in a "volunteer position". Take it or die. But nobody gives a sh... Just let's have fun. But on sundays running to chuch and praying for the poor.

You can still go on a cruise you just have to talk about the David Foster Wallace cruise essay a lot and talk about how with so many families and kids it’s really convenient and try not to go to the Caribbean. Antarctica is ideal.

You're telling me that by cruising, I'm saving their lives? Cool!

Even being a former swimming pro, I’d never go on a cruise.
