Every six months they have the option to renew their contracts.

This is right. They have contracts. Can stop after any of the contracts end. Also there are Americans that do the same job on cruises, are they slaves?

Good prior post about Disney. Pay 5K for a week at a theme park, waiting in multiple hour long lines for rides. Go every year. That is totally classy.

THey take the job at crap pay because they don't have any better options. You'll never see a white person doing any of the low paying jobs on cruise ships. They get higher level, more fairly paid positions. So it is getting your jollies at a price you can afford at the expense of poor people and racism. So classy. I don't think anyone on DCUM has argued that Disney is classy.

ICYMI: cruise ships have a long history of employing lgbtq staff—often fleeing a home country (and families) that persecute/toss them out. It’s a thing. Google it.

There are white servers on Disney cruises. We met young white servers from Scotland and England as well as other European countries.

A server from Thailand told us she earns more in a week than she would in two months at home. She supports her family by working a 6 month contract then going home for 4-6 months.

They want to pull up in their ports in an ugly boat, descend on some place, scoop the cream off the top and go back to their boat where they can drink too much and eat too much. They get to feel like they are someone special, all the while willfully ignoring the fact that they are polluting the air and the water of the “paradise” they are visiting and the fact that they are waited on hard working people who have no other option but to leave their families and their homes for months at a time for crap wages because it is their best option - and for those crap wages they get to make some schmo from the US feel like somebody. They get to tolerate drunks, aggressive passengers and unruly children, all with a smile on their face. In short it isn’t the mode of travel that makes it trashy it is the ignorance and indifference multiplied by hundreds that makes it trashy.

What are the meaningful ways classy people engage with the locals on their vacations to the Hamptons or Kiawah?

I think you’re confusing people wanting to go on an adventure vs relax without feeling like cattle. Those are two different trips.

The old money people I know don’t even do “adventure vacations” except maybe in college/early 20’s. They want to be surrounded by people like them and good help and that’s all.

Yes, in fact, some of the most moneyed people are also the most insular.

That's one of the best things about being rich. Most people would be insular if they could afford it.

This may be accurate, but it’s also quite sad.

Hold up now, I'm going to need you to elaborate on how going on a cruise is racist....or even how the employment practices of cruise companies are racist.

I think you may be getting your terms confused.

Okay, they dont have better options. What else should they do?

Have a question, when you stay at a hotel in the U.S., what percentage of the housekeeping staff is of a certain race and gender. Are you getting jollies at a price you can afford…

The tenants of a solid upbringing…work hard, do well in school, treat others nicely and cruises are “low rent.”

It is true- very few of us on vacation are truly interested in any kind of “authentic” interaction with the locals beyond surface niceties. It takes a special kind of blind entitlement to not see how entirely transactional and false these interactions are. Just smile, tip and keep it moving.

Cruise ships are trashy because they are just huge dirtbags with terrible impact on the environment. Cruising companies could invest in hydrogene drives, but the don't. They could pay the staff better, but they don't. They don't even pay taxes.

I got a Norwegian Cruise Line catalog in the mail by mistake. I was shocked to learn a cruise is $30,000. Hardly cheap and I doubt it's tacky or "trashy" at that price.

Have you been on a cruise or are you just guessing?

The problem is largely the other people on the boat with you. That and that they are pretty gross.

My Dad thinks cruises are for the masses and only takes Windstar, Crystal, or private yachts like the one he took to the Galapagos with only 8 couples aboard, a world-renown chef, and a personal assistant per couple.

What on earth are you talking about? I just checked a week long Caribbean cruise on NCL in March 2023. $2600 base price for a couple. Maybe $4k including some extras and airfare.

I love cruising on Royal Caribbean, NCL or Celebrity. I have had a wonderful time, met friends, my children had a great time. We love the activities and we all have limited diets and running around trying to find food our whole vacation would kill all fun. It is easier on a cruise and that is the main reason we go. Also, we have no family so the child care is amazing and allows us to have couple time on vacation. Lastly, some of the cruise ships are amazingly specialized. I went on a RCL cruise with an ice skating rink and ice shows that are better than stars on ice. I love to skate and am obsessed with figure skating. I also love water parks and there was one on board too.
