The children of migrants exported by Gov. Abbot from Texas to DC will now be enrolled in DC schools.

Win!

From the footage I see there aren't many kids though... mostly young men, actually. If they come for free housing and food and medicine, they should turn back, if they are willing to work, there is plenty of work to go around municipal projects and city improvements, make people work for the shelter and food at least 4 hours a day, don't give anything free, problem solved.

My church took in some of the migrants on a temporary basis until they could get on their feet. My understanding was that they very much want to work. And are working almost immediately upon arrival.

yeah there is no comparison between migrants and people living in encampments. they are almost polar opposites. the migrants went through extreme trials, expense, and effort to get themselves and their families to a safe place where they can get work and support themselves. they’re likely among the *most* capable and hard-working people in the country. people in homeless tent encampments have, for various reasons, completely given up on or are incapable of being independent contributors to society.

+1. DC spends lavishly on shelters and social services, so make it clear that staying in your tent to do drugs is not an option. The vagrancy filth and public defecation has to end.

No one should have a right to stay on the street or live in the park. DC has shelters, and let’s improve them. Let’s also demand some paid work to remove litter, sweep the streets and start with cleaning up the encampments on public spaces. Equal parts: Tough. Love.

I have never seen any children. It is majority men, on lots of drugs.

If there are children, CPS gets involved.

Migrants tend to be hardworking people who are looking for opportunities not handouts.

Nothing will happen until the situation gets so bad that real estate values drop significantly. Then DC will elect a “Law and Order” type mayor who will rigorously enforce the rules.

Can please we elect that mayor now? I would argue DC real estate values would have actually been much higher by now if potential buyers didn’t have to worry about the crazy crime and filth here.

You need to start voting every Republican (if you can find one) or center Democrat or ndependent candidate (Tony Williams type). They might not win at first but it will send a.message if they start getting more and more of the vote in DC.

Why elect liberal or conservative, we need a sensible mayor who can relate to issues their voters face and have determination to find practical solutions.

jail or work

how are they supposed to find employment that will pay for housing in DC? Honest question.
i'm and RN and I can't afford to live here. The teachers at my kid's school can't afford to live here.
How are the uneducated and addicted supposed to get jobs that support housing here?

Not all of DC is expensive. My blue collar family members were able to buy homes in South Arlington and Silver Spring, in conveniently located and quiet family friendly areas. My LMC family were able to rent and even buy cheap apartments (coop) in decent parts of the city like residential NWDC and Rosslyn. IDK what you are talking about, every city has areas in different price ranges from super expensive to very cheap and everything in between. People who cannot support themselves are simply not going to be able to live in the nicest and most expensive parts of the city, doesn't mean they cannot find other housing options or even have free facilities built for them where land is cheaper.

Newsflash. Rosslyn, Arlington, and Silver Spring are NOT in DC. Duh 🙄

There is a Washington post article about a school shooter from the 90s who is now up for parole. They mention that he has diagnosed schizophrenia, but nowhere in the article do they mention if there would be enforced aftercare if released. The problem with so many of these homeless is they are unthethered mentally ill and society will not treat them..I shudder to think of someone who has killed being released with no treatment pathway.

In DC anyone sensible at this point would not be liberal. You've seen how that has played out. You see it every day. For the record, I don't love Bowser but she's fairly sensible though I think far too generous with housing, but not emphasizing programs treatment and followthrough - it's the Council that you need to be looking at and hiding their feet to the fire on this..do you know your ward rep and how to contact them? Do you call in homeless wellness checks so they know from the number citizens are not turning a blind eye? We all need to get active on this..

Please don't confuse most migrants with the homeless. We need people able and willing to work. The homeless are neither.

Migrants of nearly all types are positively selected in some way; if it were legal, most corporations would only hire migrants.

The homeless on DC's streets are mostly negatively selected in all ways. Mental illness onwards. And then society has mostly forgotten about them, but are occasionally strung along by handouts

So a 16 year old migrant could do your job? Or are you one of the ignorant who think “corporations,” as opposed to the military, government, consultancies, law firms, and service organizations that dominate the DMV employment base do not hire migrants?

70% of the services industry employees are migrants; 75% of farmworkers; 50% construction workers. It is the overwhelming majority in a number of fields where they need able bodied workers to do physical, demanding labor that you and I just won't do. Have you ever been in a restaurant? Hotel? Seen the janitorial services at your office space? Take a walk through a construction site. Do it just one time. Migrant workers are able bodied people looking for work escaping a country where they have none. We need the types of people who put their life on the line so that they can come to a place to find employment. They are here to work and the idea that they made it all this way to just sit around is ludicrous. My bet is you know approximately zero migrants.

Homeless encampments, on the other hand, are filled with drug addicts and the mentally ill. The vast majority are in need of mental health services, rehab, and/or incarceration. These people need to be off the streets, as they are a huge danger to society.
