Is Suitland dangerous?

I used to live there, and I was happy to leave it behind as was my husband. My house was tucked away and I always felt safest there, but that's it. Very nice neighbors, no issues in the community. But the metro was terrible and all my interactions with Silver Hill Rd were the worst. Not sure if it's changed, but I was robbed at the Metro, had my bag stolen at a nearby gas station, and car broken into at a nearby apartment complex (3 separate occasions). This was around 2012-2016ish.

Truth.
I don’t make a lot of money, and I maxed out in my budget in order to buy in VA.
Worth every penny for the house and quiet, predictable neighborhood.

Yes. I’m sure you did pay a lot of money to live near Caucasians

DP but I echo PP’s sentiment and happy that I maxed out to live in VA unlike my coworker who bought in Suitland then had to move again within 2 years since they felt it was unsafe for their family. I live in a wonderful MC neighborhood with many non-Caucasian folks. I’m not interested in living anywhere close to 100% white.

OP what’s your budget?

Please don't be in PG county. It is becoming an expensive ghetto.

Pay a little extra for safety and try to get something decent in NoVA.

I have very middle class cousins who have lived in Suitland for 50 years. They love it. They have very good neighbors.

+1.

That being said, please note the following: Western PG has safe charming areas — think Hyattsville / Mt Rainer area (essentially the route 1 corridor). In addition, further out PG as you get towards crofton doesn’t have charm but it has safe, upper middle / middle class areas where parents care and want their kids to do well — think Bowie. The rest of PG is essentially an expensive ghetto where you simply don’t want to live if you value safety, community, education, etc.

The issue with the charming areas like Route 1 corridor and Bowie for example, however, is that crime spillover, and a certain mentality has caused it to feel a little like living on the edge of danger. There are kids from decent backgrounds who get involved in gangs etc to “fit in” or “prove themselves” for example. That’s not to say this can’t happen in NoVa or Western MoCo, but it’s not comparable.

As someone who lived in PG, and then moved to MoCo, and then to NoVa where I am now, do yourself a favor and move straight to NoVa and don’t look back.

There are so many things wrong in this post...

There are plenty of nice areas of PG beyond Rt 1 and Bowie. Greenbelt, Berwyn, Cheverly, Glenarden, Mitchellville, Laurel, etc. Drive through on a nice Saturday afternoon and you can get the vibe of a neighborhood.

To answer the original question, I wouldn't live in Suitland just like I wouldn't live in Langley Park or Wheaton.
