Why are you dead set on being hateful and mean on here?

Anonymous
I tend to be mean in response to people who are clearly arguing in bad faith.

Some of the posters in the politics thread are so rabid and unhinged, I often wonder if they are provocateurs for the 'other side' of what they are advocating for.

Anonymous wrote:NP here. I get why some of these examples annoy you guys and make you unsympathetic to the OP (or believe them to be a troll). I agree with many of your complaints about annoying or unreasonable behavior.

But my response to it is to… leave those threads. Which is also technically what the rules of this forum directs you to do. Don’t like an OP? Don’t respond. Responding only feeds that thread, boosts it on the board, gets more eyeballs on it. When someone is being an idiot or a troll, the best possible response is to ignore it. Or report it, if you must.

No one has actually provided a reason why being cruel or engaging in pile-ons is a justifiable response. Except the PP who said they find mean posters funny, which I personally disagree with (I usually just find these posts as annoying as the OP).

+ 100.

+1

There have been incidents where the offending party will try to say they are "joking" - but if you go back and look at their posts, it is quite obvious that it is more serious than "joking". You are not a child in a principal's office - grow up.

OP, some people pile it on just to pile it on, their lives suck that very much.

And some people don't take things as seriously as others. It's pretty clear when a thread is about something serious and when it's light-hearted and also when it's something the OP should learn the hard way is trivial even though they think it's the end of the world.

I've asked for genuine advice here and gotten it, and also shared some deeply private advice to OP's who've asked for it. I've also participated in a lot of splash fights in the pool. Know the difference.

What troubles me is when someone is obviously distraught, or is in a terrible situation, and posters pile on. It’s really poor behavior.

I think a large segment of DCUM posters are probably poor communicators/passive-aggressive IRL and use this forum to express themselves. (Unfortunately this seems to translate to bad, unempathetic behavior.)

Anonymous wrote:Op here,

I'm referring to when someone asks a question because they are trying to solve a problem or get advice, and everyone starts piling on about something irrelevant.

Ex. The post about the suspended license. The OP is asking about if a mistake was made (and then found that it was) and people piled on about "You were speeding!!" "You are a danger to society!". Like if this person paid their fines, went to court, etc... Why do these posters think they are the arbiter of justice?

Even more-so in the child rearing fora. Someone asks a simple question. Then gets completely reamed about how they are a terrible parent for even considering XYZ.

Your posts exhibit atrocious grammar.

I’m only mean to MAGA because they’re brainwashed.

Just a curious question to OP: do you not find most women in the DC area to be quite rude in person, as well? Many of them are fairly monstrous in person.

Not OP. But yes, I think people in this area are pretty terrible. We have tried to leave several times but our jobs only exist here. Our kids are adamant about not staying here.

NP. What do you find grammatically incorrect?

1. Because the anonymous nature of this message board makes people feel safe in being much, much nastier than they would be face to face, on social media where your real name is attached, or even on a forum like Reddit where people can recognize your username.

2. Because this site is just chock full of the most out of touch, entitled, idiotic people who seemingly have no shame when it comes to showing everyone just how out of touch, entitled, and idiotic they are. Like honestly, do you expect people to see posts like "Oh no I'm so poor with only my $400K HHI!" or "Anyone who eats more than one slice of pizza for an entire meal is a fatty fatty fat fat," or "people who vacation in the Outer Banks instead of chartering a private jet to Cannes are trash" and not be mean to them?

Such a vile pit of vipers there never was.

DCUM politics is an echo-chamber and entirely intolerant.

On this anonymous forum, however, where people also have zero stake in the outcome of anything, it's like mental diarrhea, it all comes out uncensored through their fingers to the keyboard. It's a totally different form of interacting and you have to get used to it. It doesn't indicate there are more mean people here, it indicates that many people have mean thoughts and reactions but mostly don't let them out due to negative consequences they aren't willing to endure.

Nailed it.
This is also my theory on why anxiety has increased. Growing up knowing all the ugly that was once kept secret has caused a ton of social anxiety in particular, I think.

Why did you ask Jeff to delete my post? I was the first person who responded to you and I said "why do you care?" and you had my post deleted which means you're just as bad as the people you're talking about.

A lot of people post really dumb questions with obvious answers. I mean, come on, the lady who complained about the SAHM posting weekday playdates but refused to organize her own weekend playdate? She deserved all the backlash she got.

Honestly, I welcome the mean posters. At least this way I know what the people around me are REALLY thinking instead of just being polite.

I don’t come here a lot but sometimes it’s just to get stuff out of my system.

It’s not real life here.
