White tie? During the daytime? For wedding guests? Wrong on so many levels I don’t even know where to start.

She also is trying to judge people and get pile-on for these relatives making such a faux pas (and implying their standard for "fancy" was a BBQ at her home, when they were probably being gracious guests). |
I agree 100%. |
Nope! You got caught being rude and now you don’t like that you started the rudeness. You don’t get to play innocent when you pooh-poohed someone’s helpful suggestion, with no purpose other than to be negative. You’re not an innocent victim, you’re one of the unnecessarily rude people on DCUM. -dp |

Op here,
Reached out today to the mother of the bride. She said “it is white tie, so tuxedos and long dresses”. I said “okay, thank you so much for letting me know!” I messaged another of DH’s cousins to see what they are wearing. As for the comments about the dress I posted, I took the advice to wear something long. I never said I was dead set on that particular dress just that I had it and it fit the criteria of “garden party”. |
Please update us after the wedding with how things turned out and if others actually wore white tie. |
| High noon is ok for white tie, otherwise not. |
White tie is properly worn after 6 pm. |
| Good Lord, people, its a wedding -- they can do it anyway they want. Maybe they wanted white tie memories, but could only get the venue for daytime. So what? Only an ogre would mock them for this. It's a wedding. |

Well, OP, now you've gotten over your social anxiety and called the host, you know what's expected! Enjoy the wedding. I'm sure it'll be lovely. Please note that I got married in my family's 18th century castle... with a farm on the grounds. The venue might actually be appropriate for white tie, even though the timing is creative. |
I thought it was after 8 pm. And means tails. Black tie is after 6. |
Now that you know that it is White Tie and and Tails, it is permissible for women to wear tiaras. |
Honestly, nobody cares anymore. Such nonsense. |
Tuxedos are not white tie. A dinner jacket is black tie. White tie is different. |
| I would need to attend this wedding just to watch the train wreck. Its funny to watch people putting on airs, and doing it oh-so-incorrectly. |
