I am also a liberal Democrat (not progressive) who would have no problem with Ryan. That said, Liz Cheney had the fortitude in public service and fight Trump, at great personal cost. Ryan saw the writing on the wall and bailed out for a very lucrative career in the private sector. Not exactly a profile in courage. I find most of her political positions abhorrent, but Liz Cheney has more stones than the rest of the national GOP put together.

No opinion on him being the commencement speaker, but the bolded is what I think of him. Passed the tax bill and bailed. I'm always curious when his name pops up b/c I wouldn't be surprised if he's playing the long game and is hoping to rise out of the ashes of MAGA and lead the GOP someday.

Worth mentioning is that part of that lucrative private sector career is being on the board of Fox, i.e. the MAGA propaganda network. His hands are not clean even if he is not the worst of the worst.

Exactly! And dumb as a brick. Coasted on his white male privilege with his barely BA Degree from Miami of OH

And you know this…how?

Lots of people in Ohio know that. He did not get into his state school- U of Wisconsin.

You don't know that either. 😂

So is this a thread about Paul Ryan speaking at SAES or a personal thread about Paul Ryan and his life? If it’s the latter, it should be moved to Political Discussion.

It’s a thread about how Paul Ryan is still a devil even though he got out before Trump. The usual let’s make everything even remotely related to conservatism into a debate where we can bash anyone that doesn’t think the same way we do.

Any school with "saint" (St.) In its name should not have a devil as a graduation speaker.

Dismissing mainstream Republicans (or Democrats) as complicit in what the more radicals in their party espouse has led to a great degradation in politics and fueled the rise of Trump. Ryan did speak out against Trump, and then had to tolerate him, and ultimately bailed. I hope he’s playing the long game because we’d be much better off if both parties returned to some semblance of normal. I know Ryan and he’s a good person.

This right here. If we keep vilifying the more mainstream Republicans, and painting them all as MAGA Tea Party types, we’re all going to be in big trouble.

-Democrat

I don't really care who speaks at a HS commencement, but, as a Democrat, I have to say that we're not "painting" Republicans as MAGA types. Other than a very few of them -- Cheney and Kinzinger, most prominently -- they're splashing the paint all over themselves.

But Paul Ryan is no longer in office so I don’t see how he’s splashing the paint on himself? Plenty of others are. But he got out. Because MAGA Republicans think he’s a RINO and Democrats were all too happy to pretend he was complicit with the same people who were driving him out.

He’s said on Fox News that Republicans should have had the guts to impeach Trump. Not obtuse. https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-paul-ryan-pathetic-loser-fox-news-2022-6?amp

Only hard-core progressives should be allowed to teach our children or speak at their graduations. Anyone else would poison our children’s minds with their intolerance.

No, it’s about bashing folks trying to tear down the social safety net so their CEO buddies can make more $$$.

Big shocker that the private school parents are all about screwing over society for cash, though.

+1. Been around SAES for almost a decade. Over time, they offer a variety of voices and speakers, though notably NOT anyone from the Trump administration when they could probably have easily had that. Most of the speakers and probably the faculty are left-leaning. Paul Ryan was being trashed on social media by Trump just days before graduation. Because Ryan said that Republicans who didn't participate in Trump's impeachment trial were cowards.

As a Class of 2022 parent and Democrat, I thought his speech was great. He's a conservative and I can't stand most of his policy positions. But I can't fault him as a choice of commencement speaker.

He's a parent and he is in a unique position to offer a perspective and advise to the class -- which is basically what's required. He didn't talk politics except to comment on the extraordinary difficulties the seniors had going through high school with the country being in such a mess. He offered encouragement. They Ryans are a nice family, and certainly, his son is such a nice kid who seems to be friends with everyone.

I read that he is related to the new Supreme Court Justice. Thanksgiving must be interesting.
