They are enablers who won’t admit that the election was fair, that Jan 6 was a coup, and that Trump is a criminal.

I'm a Republican, think the election was won by Biden fairly, think Jan 6th was a disgrace that set the party back decades, and that Trump is a criminal and should most likely be in jail (though so should a lot of people on both sides who never will be). But go ahead and be a poster child for the 'party of inclusion' and assume anyone who thinks differently than you is automatically despicable. The fact that people can't have reasonable, rational disagreements is a main reason this country is a disaster right now.

+1 Sta parent/republican and would welcome a commencement speaker from either party. Have friends who hve kids at St. Andrews, seems like such a lovely school.

You all are making me laugh because his speech was literally about staying involved, avoiding cynicism, and keeping an open mind in order to make the changes you want to make in your communities.

This thread is ridiculous, and deeply sad. Paul Ryan is a mainstream Republican. He is not MAGA and does not dispute elections. He is not "crazy"; he just has ideas outside of the ever-narrowing acceptable D.C. span of opinions. If you are a parent who wants to cancel a commencement speaker because of his political party, you are the true conservative--actually, you are a reactionary.

You obviously know nothing about politics or his deplorable voting record.

He is one of a very few sane conservatives. I would compare him to Liz Cheney. I wish the GOP had more people like him.

I am also a liberal Democrat (not progressive) who would have no problem with Ryan. That said, Liz Cheney had the fortitude in public service and fight Trump, at great personal cost. Ryan saw the writing on the wall and bailed out for a very lucrative career in the private sector. Not exactly a profile in courage. I find most of her political positions abhorrent, but Liz Cheney has more stones than the rest of the national GOP put together.

I went to both HS and college with a guy whose dad was prominent in politics in the 60s and 70s, the dad spoke at both graduations. I’m sure both schools were thrilled that they didn’t have to do too much of a search. Son was very proud of his dad.

This right here. If we keep vilifying the more mainstream Republicans, and painting them all as MAGA Tea Party types, we’re all going to be in big trouble.

He gave an excellent, very appropriate graduation speech. What more do you want?

DP, but to avoid giving platforms for crazy people, even if their successors were so crazy that they now seem normal by comparison. No, they're not decent people at all.
I'm sure he gave a nice speech - 99% of people could pull up a nice speech on the internet. Doesn't make him a good person or a role model for the kids.

Ahhhh. There it is. Just because you don't agree he should be silenced. Got it. Go you!

Former SAES parent here. It is a lovely school but leans very left despite a former president’s son. I found it very interesting that several high profile Republican politicians sent and send kids there. It truly had a blend of kids, both politically and multi culturally. Our DK arrived and leaned a bit right, came out very to the left after many thoughtful class discussions.

No opinion on him being the commencement speaker, but the bolded is what I think of him. Passed the tax bill and bailed. I'm always curious when his name pops up b/c I wouldn't be surprised if he's playing the long game and is hoping to rise out of the ashes of MAGA and lead the GOP someday.

Agree strongly with the above.
— Lived in Wisconsin long enough to know Ryan before he hit the national stage.
