I am also a liberal Democrat (not progressive) who would have no problem with Ryan. That said, Liz Cheney had the fortitude in public service and fight Trump, at great personal cost. Ryan saw the writing on the wall and bailed out for a very lucrative career in the private sector. Not exactly a profile in courage. I find most of her political positions abhorrent, but Liz Cheney has more stones than the rest of the national GOP put together.

No opinion on him being the commencement speaker, but the bolded is what I think of him. Passed the tax bill and bailed. I'm always curious when his name pops up b/c I wouldn't be surprised if he's playing the long game and is hoping to rise out of the ashes of MAGA and lead the GOP someday.

Worth mentioning is that part of that lucrative private sector career is being on the board of Fox, i.e. the MAGA propaganda network. His hands are not clean even if he is not the worst of the worst.

-A liberal Democrat who would not vote for him but appreciates a variety of voices

He didn't stay involved.

There are a lot of ways to stay involved in your community that don't include running for office or stumping for others, etc. You can volunteer at the library or donate to a food bank or participate in a park clean-up. Do you know what he does with every minute of his time and every one of his dollars?

This right here. If we keep vilifying the more mainstream Republicans, and painting them all as MAGA Tea Party types, we’re all going to be in big trouble.

-Democrat

I don't really care who speaks at a HS commencement, but, as a Democrat, I have to say that we're not "painting" Republicans as MAGA types. Other than a very few of them -- Cheney and Kinzinger, most prominently -- they're splashing the paint all over themselves.

So this applies to Jose Andreas speaking at stone ridge as well, right? And the board head at STA who had a son graduating this year and gave the main address? Just checking for consistency

Yes this applies. I'm fine with Paul Ryan in two years, maybe last year.

I don't like the idea that commencement speakers should be all Democrats.

How about nonpolitical commencement speakers? Former SAES parent and high profile doesn't have to equal political. My DC's commencement speaker was the parent of a fellow grad and while somewhat high profile, gave a fantastic, inspiring, appropriate speech. And a republican but not a pol.

Yes they are if they remain silent on the Maga Tea Party.

Yes they are.

No, they aren’t, and they put themselves on the line to prove it: Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, etc.

Two people. Whoopty Doo. They did not remain silent and the other Republicans lashed out and went scorch earth on those two. Scared any other Maga dissenters into silence instead of standing up for Cheney and Kinzinger. So yeah, the silent minority republicans are just as bad as the loud mouth, fire breathing Maga supporters because their silence encourages the Magas.

Why do they need to undertake the fight you are afraid of?

+1..They all supported the "dog whistle" politics. Just have the courage like the ones in the south and be what you are.
