How many nights to stay when moving kid into dorms? Advice BTDT please

Your child needs to take a deep breath and plunge into the college experience.

OP, is there any chance you can fly? We moved one kid to college with the help of Southwest's generous bag allowance: arrived the day before, moved in, sent him off to orientation and had a couple of drinks in the airport

Variables: Can you fly? If not, leave early the day before so traffic doesn't ruin everything
Are there organized activities after move-in? Some colleges give parents the shove
Do you have an assigned move-in time? One kid's roommate was local, so moved stuff in and went home for a few days
