Yes, it does. My husband has spent his entire career working for private sector biotech companies in MoCo.

MoCo also has way too much suburban office park space which is dying off like malls. VA has many more urban areas, better access to metro, more urban spots for young educated professionals like Clarendon, Ballston etc.

Because MD and MoCo don't diversify their tax base, duh. If everyone in MoCo has to drive to VA for jobs, it means the only real revenue for the county overwhelmingly comes from income taxes. When the county needs more money what can they do? All they can do is raise property and income taxes. The fact that MoCo cannot grow organically and create jobs other than ones that suck off the govt teat means it misses out on tons of corporate taxes that help reduce the taxation burden on residents. Residents will flee if all the county can ever do is raise taxes and struggles to create quality jobs.

LOL. Is that the reason why more people moved to MoCo in the last 10 years than to Fairfax county? People reluctantly move to NoVa because of their jobs and not because of quality of life. Even with plenty of jobs, NoVa is not a pleasant place to live.

You could see it as MoCo is nicer to people with no means. VA is no lover of poor people, it seems.

Why do people consistently compare MoCo -- one county -- to several counties in VA -- ALL of NoVa. It's bizarre. Almost like one county in NoVa can't compete with MoCo, so they have to throw in a bunch of other counties to complete. I"m from out of the area (out west), and when I moved here, and kept seeing all the comparison between one county in MD to ALL of NoVa, I found it baffling.

If you want to include Loudon county in your competition, then you have to include HoCo in MD because Loudon is just as far to DC as HoCo is to DC.

You guys really come across as insecure when you do this, btw.

So basically, MoCo relies entirely on govt jobs and some crappy low paying service sector jobs at places like Giant, Safeway, and Target. Meanwhile in NoVa, the top employers are major banks, super high end tech and software companies, top consulting firms, and other major professional services firms. How is MoCo not doomed with this flimsy of a tax and employer base?

This is one of the reasons GMU students in certain techy and computer science fields are snapped right up before graduation.

no idea on who is legal or not but the census would show that most new residents are lower income, less educated in MoCo

Sure they do. GS-14s and 15s are definitely comparable to the tons of $120-$150k jobs these places have. More at Treasury pay scale. Not everyone is an executive. Stock options ans bonuses are another story though. But a lot of people don’t stay long enough for a lot of those to vest at FAANGs.

You realize GS 14-15 salaries are senior level positions in the govt and are positions that less than 5-8% of all USG workers hold? A $120-150k job is a salary that's pretty entry level at a company like Amazon. Amazon and Microsoft are paying their engineers way, WAY more than $120k, lol.

Housing is much more expensive in Virginia, that's why there are more poor people in MoCo. There are more jobs for poor people in MoCo too.

MoCo has less public transportation than NoVA. MoCo has only the Red Line and limited MARC service. NoVA has Blue, Yellow, Silver, and Orange Lines. And extensive VRE service.

It’s not comparable. Even if it was just a Fairfax vs MoCo comparison, transit infrastructure in VA still wins. Also better roads.
